Colored Lights (Kinetics) and DJ stuff

Colored Lights (Kinetics) and DJ stuff

So one thing I never really thought about at all was lighting at the wedding...when I imagined what I'd want out of a dj, I was thinking mainly in terms of music/presentation...my fiance and I are both musicians, and we're kinda 'old soul' types...only into a little bit of modern music...and definitely not into house music and the whole 'club' feel...We never like it when the dj does the whole 'welcome...the newwww...Mrrrrr. and Mrs...... Smiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiith' ::techno beat, flashing lights, raising the roof:: (I think you know what I mean...it's been done at most of our peers' weddings)

However, I have no idea what we need in terms of lighting and what's reasonable...we're going to be at Flowerfield, and the ballroom is very white...it'd be nice to break it up with some colored uplighting...but that stuff can get pretty expensive...if you don't get any fancy, schmany lighting, I'm wondering what most people do to keep costs down but make sure they have the ambience they need for their first dance and all that stuff... any advice?

Also any advice on particular dj's with good prices/packages who really come through with this stuff?

Thanks a bunch!

First question, are you having a day or night wedding.

L.I. sound had some good lighting packages. They're doing my uplighting and lighting for the dance floor.

It's a night wedding

I wouldn't do a lighting package through your DJ. You don't need all the club lights since it's not your thing. If your dj does provide it I would get uplighting placed around the room in one shade. Sometimes it can be changed through the party but then it's more $ and gives it a club-ish feel.

Hi! We are also getting married at Flowerfield and are having a band so I wanted to hire a lighting company. We just hired TJ from Apple Entertainment. We are having uplights around the perimeter of the reception room - I didnt want anything on the dance floor (I dont want it to look like a club, I wanted a romantic ambiance that the uplights would bring) ... He is very reasonable! Good luck - hope this helps!

I don't think lighting is necessary, it's pretty expensive. If it's way too white in there for you why not get colored table cloths?
We won't be getting any crazy lighting. The RH already has built in uplighting (which I'm not sure why) and I haven't decided if I like it or not. I don't want all those crazy lights going back and forth over the dance floor. They remind me of school dances and sweet 16s. I saw a video from one DJ (I can't remember which) but they had those two little rotating balls with lights but they were white instead of colored. That might look pretty and not too crazy club like.
