Thanks everyone who answered my post about areas of Nassau. We are checking some of them out. I was also wondering in Suffolk- does anyone know anything about these areas? DH heard they are good, esp Commack. Any feedback is appreciated.

Liz-
GREAT AREA !!! (guess where I live? ) I have a Smithtown address, but since im on the Commack/Smithtown border, Im in the Commack school district. So we get all the advantages/priveleges of Smithtown residents AND get a great SD..'the best of both worlds' our Real Estate agent told us !
Just a sidenote, almost ALL school districts in this area are excellent, Im just a little partial to SD#10
Good luck !

Ditto what Anna said. Both are great areas, good school districts, and convenient to all (highways, shopping, etc.).

Elizabeth,
We are in Ronkonkoma, but in the Connetquot School district #7. We really love it here.
JenRenne works in the Commack school district so I'm sure she would have a wealth of information for you

Re: Commack-Smithtown
I grew up in Commack and although at the time I couldn't wait to get out, it's definately where I knew I'd want to plant my roots and raise a family someday. So I moved to Nesconset which is in the town of Smihtown and about 10 minutes away from the house I grew up in.
Both school districts are excellent.
The commute's a bit hellish though. DH takes the Ronkonkoma line. It's an express stop. His commute is about an hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours each way. He says it's worth it though.

Re: Commack-Smithtown
FH grew up in Commack (we are getting married at Christ the King on Indian Head Road) and that's where his heart is.
Put it this way: When we were fantasizing about winning the lottery I said 'Let's build a house on the North Shore, like in Belle Terre (Port Jeff)' and he goes 'Rachel, if we win the lottery we are moving to Commack.'
LOL!

Re: Commack-Smithtown
Thanks everyone, I will let DH know. He will be the one commuting - to Brooklyn but thankfully it's only 2 or 3 days a week.
Anna-I knew you lived in Smithtown-but I forgot. Great!
We are going to check the area out this weekend.
I will definitely keep the other areas in mind. It's so hard to decide where to look in LI.

Re: Commack-Smithtown
Elizabeth -
I grew up in Commack and so did FH. We got pretty disgusted with the house prices (a small ranch around the block from me is listed for $410,000!) in Commack and we opted to move to East Northport. It is a great school district, just as good as Commack and Smithtown and the prices are a bit cheaper.
Hauppauge is also a great SD and the taxes are really low but prices there are high also b/c of the low taxes.
My real estate agent was awesome - she knows all the areas like the back of her hand and isn't pushy at all. If you'd like her name send me a FM.
If you have any questions about any of the areas let me know - FH and I looked for a house for 2 and 1/2 years - we know everything there is to know at this point

I am an employee of the Smithtown Central School District, and I can tell you from an insider's point of view that is truly is a WONDERFUL school district. I am not a resident though....

Re: Commack-Smithtown
I have family in Kings Park, which is a cute town next to Commack. It'a also near the water, where Commack is more inland and IMO, congested. I would def. check out East Northport too.

I grew up in Kings Park. It is a great town with good schools too. Smithtown, Nesconset and Commack are also really nice. It is far from the city - but dependin upon where you work its not too bad. I woudl love to get a ouse in that area after we get married.

Re: Commack-Smithtown
I grew up in that area (Smithtown address/Commack schools). DH was in Commack as well. I was like susans - couldn't wait to get out of there (I think that happens everywhere). But I think its a great area to raise a family. Great school district. The commute to NYC is a killer.
The only reason I wouldn't consider moving there (when we head back east) is the close proximity to all our parents. I need at least a 15-20 minute buffer zone

Elizabeth, I teach in Commack, and live in the Smithtown/St. James area. Fire away any questions you may have... I'll most likely know the answers, or where to find them.

Re: Commack-Smithtown
Jenn - my mom works for Commack schools (did we do this already)? She worked in Hubbs for years and now she's over at the HS guidance center. Which school do you work in?

I don't think we discussed this... FM for the answer to your question.
