Phuket is where the beautiful beaches are. Phi Phi islands are gorgeous. I don't know how much time you plan on being in thailand but you could probably do both bangkok and phuket. domestic flights are really cheap. (~$100 round trip on airasia.com) the temples in bangkok are worth checking out. shopping is ultra cheap as well.
if you go to thailand, you have to stay at the top hotels. the country itself is pretty poor. the streets are dirty and i felt sticky constantly.
the spas are absolutely amazing though and cheap.

dido to Pucket. I love that island. I also love Bangkok as well. Depending on when you go the have festivals in Chaing Rai or Chaing Mai. Worth going if the festival is on.
