would like to know if any of you mothers have had experience with constipation in their newborn. If so, what did you do to help the baby with their discomfort and to get them to go regularly on their own?? any advice is a BIG help, my little one is in soo much pain at times and I cant stand it.

I used the mylicon drops and I mixed prune juice with water
also I didn't give marissa anything with bananas or rice since both can make you constipated.
Call your dr. to find out how much water to how much prune juice you should mix.

Thank You for the info, my son is 5 weeks old his Dr. said to give him 1/4 ounce prune juice everyday, how long did it take to work and did it give her diahrea(sp?)

I've never heard of a baby that young having constipation, is he on a formula high in iron?

he is being breastfed and he is to get atleast one bottle of enfimil with iron a day so make up for the amount of vitamin D that he should have. so instead of shocking his system with this one bottle a day, I have been giving him a little maybe an ounce of enfamil in each of his breast bottles. I had the same problem with my daughter when she was a baby.

DS was also very constipated and still is, if we don't give him prunes 2x a day (and he is now 10 months old). When he was younger, doc told us to give him 1 tablespoon of prune juice once or twice a day...... we would give it to him through a dropper. Then we went to prune juice mixed with water..... now he has the prunes, plus apple juice mixed with water every other day. I know how horrible it is to see the baby strain and how much pain they go through. I would call the doc just to ask their opinion, but this is what our doc told us. Hope this helps
I only BF for 6 weeks and when I supplemented two bottles a day for formula, she went once a week! Ask if you can give him suppositories. I used them every other day for two weeks and not she goes about 3 times a week~Juliette will be 18 weeks tomorrow.

the nurse did suggest that I use a suppository. I did and he went a little that first day and then the next day he really went off. I give him the prune juice everyday. and I will try the formula everyday. Something has to give.
