I wear glasses for distance, and was thinking about doing contacts for the day of, so that I can actually SEE FH's expression as I walk down the aisle. I don't have vision on my plan, and I called Pearle and Lenscrafters, and both quoted over $100 for the eye exam and then $20-$30 for a box of lenses. My boss told me I could get a 'trial pair'....how long do those last for, and how long does it really take to 'get used to them?' I have astigmatism too, but they make contacts for that now too...right?

Re: Contact Lenses....
they do make contacts for astigmatisim, i have them, you can ask for a trail pair if you're planning to just use them for the wedding. They usually last a couple of days, I would ask the eye doctor and tell them you need time to make your decision. Ususally if you find a cheaper price and bring the print out most big brand chain stores will honor that price.

I use Acuvue and also have a mild astigmatism. On their website you can get a ceritifcate for free trial lenses. Not sure how it works just thought Id look it up for you. HTH

So how much do you think it would cost?

Re: Contact Lenses....
Jen, I have acuvue advance contacts - they are 2 week lenses but I have been wearing them for a month at a time with NO problems. So if they give you a trial pair, tell them you want ones that aren't dailies - this way, you can wear them for a few days at least to get used to them.
But honestly, it shouldn't take you very long to get used to them. I have been wearing them for like 15 years and even when I first got them, I didn't feel them. When they are in right, they shouldn't be noticeable at all. (there is a proper way for them to be on your eye - meaning they can be inside out and that is uncomfortable - the dr will show you the proper way. plus, if they are not directly over your iris, they will feel funny, but you cna usually 'blink' them or move them into place pretty easily.)

Re: Contact Lenses....
You do NOT need a membership to go for the exam at Costco! I did exactly what you're looking to do before my wedding... You can have your exam for contacts for $80 and you get FREE trial lenses to try.. if you don't like them, they'll give you another brand of FREE trials, etc... even gave me free fluid and case... all I paid was $80! If you decide to continue to wear them after the wedding and purchase more, then you can go with anyone and use their membership to purchase. (I never purchase more since I really just wanted them for the wedding.. so the 2 trial pairs were more than enough)
I recommend Dr. Baltis at Commack 631-462-8562. BTW, when you first walk in and and they look for your card, just tell them your there for an eye appt and they let you in
If you want to go there, call and make your appt asap, you'll want to wear them for at least a week or 2 before the wedding to get used to them!
Edit.. forgot I have astigmatism too... they had lenses for me

Re: Contact Lenses....
ok...i just called Lenscfaters...they said it's $59 for an eye exam. but $104 for a contact exam...what is the difference? He also said the trial pair lasts about a week. So, if don't wear them every day, I could get two or more weeks out of them?

Yup, they had given me 2 trial pairs b/c (my DH too) and we both wore them just for the wedding. But definitely wear them beforehand for a week or so to get used to them.. they are a bit annoying at first
btw... obviously don't tell the Dr you have no intention of not purchasing more lenses.. just take the trials to start and decide for yourself if you want to purchase more later on

Definitely. I say you can double the time they 'say' they last for and they will still be comfortable. I think my doc gives me the same kind of lenses I buy - and they are 2 week lenses that I wear for a month.
Re: the difference between the two exams - for the contact one, they have to measure different things to make sure the contact fits on your eye properly. It takes a bit longer and I assume that's where the extra charge comes in.

Re: Contact Lenses....
i actually just started wearing contacts within the last month. i had to go for 2 trial sessions before i was able to get them in. it still takes me a few minutes to get them in when i wear them, but i can do it now! when i went for the contact lessons they gave me 10 trial pairs to work with. then i bought a 3 months supply from my eye doctor.

Cool. So two pairs lasted you about two weeks? How long did you wear them each day?
Of course I would not say I won't buy more, I'm just gonna say I want to try them....
