The Thursday before Fourth of July. The official holiday is Monday so most people have to work that Friday but then they have the long weekend.
Thoughts?

Re: controversial date?
As long as the people you want there can make it- I'd go for it. I'd only worry about close friends and immediate family. The date will save you alot of money too. There will probably be people that dont love the date...but then they just wont go. As long as the people who matter most are there- thats whats most important.

I had the Thurs before July 4th (which was a Fri). It all worked out fine. I sent out STD so people knew well in advance.

Good luck :) I'm learning now that you have to do what will work best for you. It's too hard to try and accomodate every single person you are inviting. It's just not possible. The people who really want to be there will come no matter when it is.
