controversial subject that has me confused

controversial subject that has me confused

So maybe some of you have heard about this

I am confused as to why people are attacking it. Aren't people always criticizing the Church for not being progressive? Isn't this at least a somewhat progressive announcement to make?

I'm not trying to stir a fight or anything (although a debate certainly may arise lol), I'm just confused why some are criticizing and poking fun at this when the same people have been asking for change all along. I'm hoping someone can clarify.

I am not Catholic, but its ABOUT FRIGGIN TIME the vatican FINALLY recognizs that condoms save lives.

I think the vatican and Pope have been in the stone age when it came to this. I respect their view when it comes to what THEY believe....but to have such a backward, bad, deathly policy for so long (no condoms) makes me shake my head and wonder if they thought about the implications of that policy.

I am hapy that they recognize people will LIVE because of this policy.

I say this with respect. I do not agree with the catholic church, but I respect the faith and followers. I deeply respect the Pope.

I am not Catholic either but I had this conversation with my dad (who is Catholic) when it came on the news this weekend. While I think it's GREAT that the Catholic church recognizes condoms and gave them the 'ok', the pope knows nothing about condoms. Would you ask an artist to wire your electric? Would you ask a farmer his thoughts on what suit he thinks is best for the office space?

My dad made a good point and while I agree (like I said) it's great that the pope says 'ok' to condoms, what does he really know about them to say 'ok' or to say 'no'?

I'm Catholic and when I saw this on Monday night... I yelled to DH in the other room about it and he was like 'WHAT?!'

And had to come see for himself. Couldn't believe it.

I think its great.

THe problem is that the Pope is not saying condoms are ok. He said that male prostitutes should use condoms to help prevent the spread of HIV.

The church's stance on condoms as birth control has not changed, and this is unfortunate.

I don't think it's a big deal if they don't support it as birth control.

You aren't supposed to be using anything for BC if you're a practicing Catholic -- but I do think it's incredibly important for anyone who has an STI to be using it for the purpose of not spreading it.

The reason I think it's a big deal is because I've gone to Catholic School my whole life. They avoided the subject of sex like it was the plague because they aren't supposed to tell us to use condoms. So I think this is a great step forward!

Yeah, I agree with you both. There's also some confusion about what the Pope said...he used a word in Italian that was unclear whether he meant males/females/etc....and it was interpreted as male prostitutes. When asked to clarify, he said that he meant anyone who has HIV. I think it's a big step, which is why I was so confused as to why some people who want the Church to be more progressive were criticizing it.

Yeah I remember seeing that on CNN when they clarified what he said. I didn't know anyone was criticizing it or why they would be.

Re: controversial subject that has me confused

I'm Catholic, and I think the church's stance on certain things, like birth control, is just plain stupid.

In order to get married in the church we had to watch a dvd about natural family planning. I understand it's a great option for some people, but presenting it in a way that makes it 'wrong' to use other methods definitely rubs me the wrong way!

At least this is a step in the right direction...
