Thank GOD so many Americans take marriage so seriously...I mean what is next? A show that has a family pick the future husband for their daughter and she never even saw him...oh, wait that has been done...hum...about a dwarf who has to go into hot tubs with women and pick a wife...wait, again already done.

Point is: marriage was NEVER religious.

I say that any time the topic of gay marriage comes up. People are so 'afraid' of what a gay marriage is going to do to the 'sanctity' of marriage...yet they plug in to the Bachelor, the Bachelorette, etc. WHAT do shows like THAT do to the 'sanctity' of marriage??? Puh-lease.

How is homosexuality being glamorized?

I am finally seeing people being more open about their sexuality. I am not getting an 'in my face' feeling about it but now people don't presume that everyone is heterosexual since they aren't.

I don't think it's just the gay lifestyle that is glamorized per se but just sex in itself that is glamorized.

Girls are pressured to have sexual experiences at a young age - lesbian or not.
But I do agree with you on how girls who have a gay experience are perceived as 'cool'. But they are the girls that do it to be 'look at me, I'm different' and usually it's not because they really are gay.

I think the glamorization of the gay lifestyle is a result or backlash of our government and our President who is very conservative in his view on homosexuality.

Gay Marriage - too general a term.

I guess I find it an odd to say Gay Marriage. I have no problem with homosexuals being together and loving eachother living together and committing their lives to eachother in a life long committment.

Who made marriage? The church or the state (its like the chicken and the egg question)

If a church would allow them to be considered married would it matter if the law says they aren't? If the law says they can, but the church says they can't are they married?

Anyone (gay or not) should be able to live their lives however they please and be happy.

If they would be happier if the state made it legally possible for them to gain the status of 'married' then I think the term married needs to be redefined, not the terms of 'who' can be married. Man and woman = Life Long Partners, so does Man and Man and woman and woman.

So I guess, personally I could care less. Do what you want to do. Let the law stay as it stands. Both are valid views to me. Does that make me a fenced vote?

In Texas I nearly was married by ACCIDENT!!! Why? Because we both wore rings and presented ourselves as a married couple. According to what the attorney told me, if we acted like a married couple (ie if we wear rings, etc), if we intermingle funds and society accepted us as a married couple (ie tax filing) then we WERE married. Isn't that a screwed up pile of crap? I nearly had to get a divorce from a man I didnt marry. (we were engaged)

What's wrong with Common Law marriage? Why can't we do that?

What bothers me isn't the idea of allowing more people to be considered 'married'. My problem is it's so un-american or polictically incorrect to say not say 'yes'. Meaning you can't say I dont care, Im not gay.

Is it hurting them not to be married, other than a tax break? Why not make more corporations recongize 'partners'? My company does, partners get benefits.

I thinking this isnt as simple as some would like us to think. It's complex and huge. I think it's like trying to change EVERYTHING at once when we'd be better off changing the small things, gaining precident and then taking on the bigger matter.

JMHO for all that I will get slammed for it.

Has anyone ever seen the movie If These Walls Could Talk on HBO I felt so sad when the ladies nephew came and took everything these ladies had together for some ungodly amount of years.

This is exactly what I think of everytime someone brings up this issue! That was such a sad scene!
I am for gay marriages 110%!

They are people, they love, they should have the same rights as me and my FH. What makes us any better?

Yes - they will not be legally married and it would only be recognized by that religion (or maybe other religions would recognize it too, I dont know for sure)

Yes, because a marriage certificate is a legal document.

Holy Cow! That's crazy! But different states have different laws that define 'marriage'. I know about common law but I don't know if it's accepted in every state or after how many years. I think it's a different amt of years in different states.

What's wrong with Common Law marriage? Why can't we do that?

Yes, there are many other things that married couples benefit from - dealing with property and pensions and federal tax issues to deciding where your spouse should be buried when he/she dies. I don't know if domestic partners get all those rights/benefits. I posted an interesting website in one of my earlier posts on this thread which explains what rights are afforded married couples vs. domestic partners.

I'm not slamming, I hope! And I agree it's not a simple thing. Many other laws would be invalided by making same sex marriage legal I think and it will certainly cause a domino effect somewhere, but I still think that it's only fair to let same sex monogamous couples marry just like heterosexual couples.

Nope no slam. You see what I saying perfectly. Too many questions.

I see that domino effect in my mind. So I can't say I 100% support any of this screaming and protesting.

I think I understand what they deserve and I agree, but I think they are going about the wrong way. Although I agree with the current atmosphere of politics and the way the public tries so hard to please everyone, it's a good time to take advantage of the public opinion. I just hope they don't get burned by pushing this too hard. Change never happens overnight and change that is forced is usually the one that is most fought against. That type of forced change inititives always have a price. I just hope the price isn't too high.

I think it should be allowed as a civil process. As everyone else has said, if two people love each other why should they not be permitted to wed. There are many heterosexuals who marry numerous times and have removed all sanctity from the event.
Mostly, I think they should be allowed to wed in order to have things other married couples take for granted. They can get joint insurance policies for discounted prices, take advantage of one partners health care insurance. If they own a home together and something happens to one the other is taken care of. Things like that. We don't even think about those things and they get none of these advantages. I couldn't imagine being in love with someone and not knowing what would happen if he/she got sick. Would I be able to assist in health care, would I even be able to make any decisions? Those are the reasons gay people should be able to marry. They will not be able to marry in a church right now anyway, homosexuality is not accepted by most Christian religions at this time.
I just feel that this is going to be like the abortion or gun control issue, noone is ever going to win and the fight will go on forever.
Whatever happened to the part in the Declaration of Independence where 'all men are created equal', who gives us the right to decide that homosexuals can't marry, but heterosexuals can.
That's all I'm going to say, I'm not going to say any more.

I can and did say that because my point is: its not about being 'gay.' Honestly, gay or straight, I think that it is completely irrelevant. I strongly believe that its a matter of discrimination. That was why I said I DO NOT support discrimination. I see absolutely no reason to prevent consenting adults from marrying. And the only laws I see it invalidating are the sodomy laws...although I thought they were already changed.

My marriage will not be recognized by my religion - I'm not getting married in a church. But once again, its not about religion or the church (at least its not supposed to be). NO ONE is asking the church to change its (archaic) views. I heard recently that the church books still believed that the earth was the center of the universe until 1962...as far as I'm concerned, the church will always be behind the times. JMHO.

Marriage was created as a LEGAL institution where men could gain control of property, their wives and children...and when I say control, I mean OWNERSHIP. Believe me, my FH doesn't/won't/can't OWN me. And way back then (I'm talking pre-Christ days) the church WAS the state. It has changed over the centuries, and will continue to do so.

How is homosexuality being glamorized?

Well, 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' is one example. 'Will and Grace' is another.

Now I love Will and Grace, and I think it's a show for adults anyway.

But Queer Eye has become all the rage, and they really DO make being gay seem cool and fun.

How about when Brittney kissed Madonna??

It's a glamorization, and it's not necessary.

I think I am misunderstaing your point. Are you saying that because there are gay people, both real and fictional, on television they should not be able to be married legally?

Why can't it be cool and fun to be gay? It's cool & fun to be a rock star but it doesn't make me want to be one.

(I am discounting the publicity stunt of Madonna & Britney. It was nothing more then a way of getting attention for both celebrities).

Honestly, if I live to be 10000 I will never understand why you equate polygamy with discrimination against homosexuals.

I'm still not 100% decided on this.

On the one hand, I don't see anything wrong with gay marriage. If two people love each other, who I am to judge and say that they shouldn't get married?

But on the other hand, I'm not too thrilled with all the 'glamorization' of homosexuality that is going on today.

Kids growing up are being bombarded with gay images and ideas. It's almost gotten to a point where it's cool to be gay. Not to mention the girls growing up today. There is actually pressure on them to have lesbian experiences. It's 'cool' and the guys love it, so it makes them popular. ***!?

I think your sexual preference is private, and should be kept private. I don't think the gay lifestyle should be glamorized. I'm sure it's far from cool or glamorous to be gay. I'm sure it's a very difficult lifestyle. I think the media needs to tone way down on this and just let it drop already.

Who cares what you are anyway! It's a bad influence on our kids to be bombarded by all this crap. It's hard enough to come of age these days without all the added confusion.

I don't see a difference between the glamorization of being gay vs. being heterosexual. When I look at media, I think sex in general is all over the place. Someone may argue your point and say, 'I don't like that heterosexuality is being glamorized....'

Re: Controversial Topic

Well prohibition of gay marriage is discriminating against gay people.

Outlawing polygamy does not discriminate against anyone. It does not tell any person/group/race/ethnicity that they CANNOT do something that all other people are legally allowed to do.

NO ONE is legally allowed to be a polygamist in this country (as far as I'm aware). EVERYONE except homosexuals are allowed to marry.

Your post basically says what I am saying.....Polygamists are grown men and women who choose to share in that lifestyle.....why are they not allowed, how is it different than homosexuality....and don't say they didn't choose it because AI am sure polygamists could say the same thing.
