Hi all. What's the coolest restaurant in Manhattan you've been to or heard about?
My fiance and I were originally planning to have our wedding at a local museum/gallery, but it doesn't look like that will work out. We don't want to do the hotel or park thing, so we decided that it'll be simplest just to have the ceremony and reception at a nice Manhattan restaurant.
We know there are the standard 'romantic' restaurants (Riverside Cafe, Tavern on the Green, etc.), but there must be other options too! Space is not an issue since it'll only be for 30-35 people. Something small, cozy, and intimate is best. Even better if it has striking architectural elements or décor - staircase, high ceilings, unique colors, anything that made you go WOW. We just want something stylish and memorable, you know?
Any cool places come to mind? Also, what websites are good for researching restaurants (other than Zagats of course)? Thanks.

River Cafe- Its not in NYC but it's right across the River in Brooklyn under the bridge. The views of NYC are amazing.

What about doing something at Jeckyl and Hyde...that would definitely be something funky for a wedding.

How about Olive's? A friend of mine had a small wedding dinner there...it's also attached to a hotel. It's on Park Ave at 18th, I think.

Definitely check out Candela! There are a few restaurants in Grand Central that also do small weddings. Also look at the locations listings on NY mag's webpage, I know they list some restaurants. It's www.nymetro.com, under 'weddings'

You MUST check out ELEVEN MADISON PARK. I work for the company, so I am biased, but the space is amazing, the food is incredible, and they have a private dining room that people get married in often. Oh! And the view of Madison Square Park is amazing!

if you want a cool exotic feel, Tao in midtown has a huge fountain and Buddha, funky music and lighting - and panasian cuisine. it's big enough also. There's also a panasian place called Rain that i've heard is cool looking. Apparently I'm obsessed with the Asian food. good luck!

La Belle Epoque has a cool old school New Orleans vibe.
New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon park near the Cloisters is a tudor style building.

Re: Cool Manhattan restaurants?
It depends on what you mean by cool. Do you want upscale and elegant or something funky and untradtional?
Eleven Madison and River Cafe both have separate areas to hold parties and both are beautiful, food is excellent, service top notch. Just a guess but its probably about $250 a person to have something on a weekend night with drinks and dinner, etc..
PS: I looked into renting out a restaurant to have our wedding. If you are closing the restaurant down, most good restaurants will want a min of $15-20K for a weekend night.

Manhattan Grille was a nice place with great food. Not sure if they do large parties, but most places will for the right $$$.
