Cop saved by his bullet proof vest

When I heard this story I almost had a heartattack. I heard it on the news this afternoon and Brian's cousin her boyfriend his name is Pete, he's 27 and it was his precient. Thank god he wasnt on duty. But all I heard was Pete, age, shot, precient. It took about 1 minute for me to realize it wasnt his last name.

Here is the story:
Police Officer Saved By His Bulletproof Vest

MAY 22ND, 2003

A police officer shot in Brooklyn early Thursday morning was saved by his bulletproof vest, police said.

When Peter Garrito and another undercover officer, Daniel Perez, approached a suspicious man on Carlton Avenue in Prospect Heights just after midnight, police said, a gun dropped from the suspect’s belt. After Garrito picked it up, the suspect, Martin Diggs, pulled out another gun and shot the officer twice, according to police.

Officer Garrito was shot in the ankle and another bullet struck his protective vest, but he managed to use the dropped gun to fire back at Diggs, hitting him four times, police said.

Garrito, 27, is listed in stable condition at Kings County Hospital. According to the doctor who treated him, he would have died had he not been wearing the vest, since the bullet hit directly over his heart.

“He's an example of the best this city has to offer, and we should all be thankful,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who visited Garrito in the hospital. “But we shouldn't forget that in order to make this the safest big city in the country, it requires men and women like Peter to be out there and to put their lives at risk.”

Diggs, 30, is in serious condition at Brookdale Hospital and is expected to survive. Charges against him are pending.

The officers initially confronted Diggs, police said, after another man, afraid he was going to be robbed, told them that someone was following him. Police said Diggs has a record of six arrests on robbery, drug and weapons charges.

Officer Perez, 29, was treated for a broken hand.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Garrito is the 81st officer saved by his vest since the NYPD made them standard in 1983.

I agree. I hope all cops wear them. It shows they really do save lives.
