I think one of the beauties about corned beef is the fact that you can throw it in a pot with water, potatoes and cabbage and in a few hours have a great meal-no fuss. I've never had corned beef in any other way.
(Unless you make hash or something like that.)

Agree. I think FH's granmother sticks cloves in the corned beef, cooks it for a few hours, eventually adds potatoes and cooks it longer and then finally adds cabbage and cooks it until cabbage is cooked. Total of 4 hours I think. The thing just boils away.

Re: Corned Beef
I do nothing more than boil it - 3-4 hours depending on the size. If it comes with a seasoning pack I add that to the water - if not I may add some peppercorns to the boiling water.

Re: Corned Beef
I overheard some recipe on TV .. didn't get any details .. but they used very little water .. and added 'ale.' They boiled it with quartered onions and I think something else .. then they later added the cabbage.
Sorry this is so vague .. but it's definitely different!

Re: Corned Beef
I usually use the pepper seasoning packet it comes with. I also heard putting beer in the pot tastes good.

Re: Corned Beef
I just bought my corned Beef to make for St. Patty's Day. The one I bought didn't come with the seasoned packet. What else can I add besides beer??

Re: Corned Beef
Okay .. so I tried doing corned beef in beer .. and thought it came out pretty tasty.
In a stainless steel pot, I put in the corned beef, 3 onions (quartered), a bunch of mini carrots (14 or so), about 6 red potatoes (cut into hunks), about 10 pepper corns, 1 bay leaf .. poured in 3 bottles of Amstel Light .. and just enough water to make sure everything was covered with liquid. Cover the pot. Simmer slowly. About half-way through, take out the veggies .. and put in a quartered cabbage. With 20 minutes left, put veggies back in.
