How is everyone affording these houses on LI? I feel like even if I want a terribly small run down shack on no property in a bad area of town, I'll still need to pay over 400K! That's before taxes, utilities....I just don't know if we can do it, especially if we have a kid or one of us loses our job. Any advice? What is a realistic expectation of how much it costs per month to run a home?
there are affordable houses under 400K...you just have to search...
hang in there...

Mortgages in the 2k per month mark are pretty much the norm these days
Dont know if that helps

The prices are very high, and we are in the process of buying a home right now and the only things that makes me nervous is when it is time to hae children, I don't know how we are going to do it on 1 salary, I think I would have to go back to work right after delivery and how sad is that

It's insane.. We could have afforded more house, but we opted to get a house that we could sustain on only one of our salaries.. that way, we wouldn't be working for the house, but for ourselves too.. and esp. in these times, you need to take precaution, you know? Your house is OUT there!! trust me.. you just have to do your homework and you will find it!!
