My dresses were $181 but with the discount from the dress shop they came out to $161. I think that's a good price. Shop around and ask for a discount!! The worst they can say is no!

I think anything under $200 is reasonable for 2 reasons:

1) it is so hard to find a dress any cheaper then that; and
2) (please don't take this the wrong way - I swear I am not bridezilla) these girls agreed to be in your bridal party knowing the financial obligation. It is an honor that you asked them and I think that anything under $200 is reasonable. I would not expect them to have to pay more then that (unless they are willing.)

I hope I can find a dress for that. Right now, the cheapest dress I found that I like is $210.

what is an average price for the alterations done independently then?

Independent alterations can vary greatly in price. I have never paid more than $30 when I went to an independent person (and once I had a size dress taken down to a size 2 - long story!). But for m firend's wedding I paid about $25 and my other friend paid $75 and we both had about the same amount of work done to the dress. It depends on the seamstress.

Where I use to live in the city, there is this tiny hole in the wall shop that does a great job at really cheap prices! I have sent som many people there and they all like him. He will do it in a week too! Let me know if you are intersted.
