hey girl another bride FM'd me a while back asking about Costa Rica (probably because im obsessed with it and i'm always talking it up lol) so heres the email i sent her its like a mini review
First off your gonna love Costa Rica, its absolutley impossible not too! I'm so jealous your going for what 2 weeks, thats awesome! we only went for about 5 days. At first we had booked the hotel Banana Azul in Puerto Viejo but we cancelled because it didnt pay for us to travel all the way to Puerto Viejo from San Jose for such a short trip so we decided to stay in San Jose. If we ever go back I'm staying at the Banana Azul for sure, look them up its heaven and the prices are shockingly good.
We decided to stay in San Jose at the Hotel & Restaurante Grano de Oro - the food was so good (although not all inclusive) the hotel was under a little bit of renovation when we went (last June) so they updgraded our room for us at no charge.
A quick review of the trips we did within San Jose:
While we were there we did the San Jose City Tour, that was alright a little boring at times alot of museums, the city of San Jose kind of reminds me of a cross between DC and what NYC was about 10 years ago can be a little sketchy at night.
We also did Pueblo Antiguo - this was cool they picked us up at the hotel one night (every tour provided transportation and almost all of them included food) and they drive us to this little tiny reastaurant (kinda looked like a hut) on top of a mountain where they served traditional costa rican food and they put on a very awesome song and dance show kinda like a luau - the best part was you can look out from the restaurant and if its a clear night see the volcano that was right there.
A review of the day trips from San Jose:
we did the Rain Forest Aerial Tram - it was about an hour drive from the hotel and lunch was included (the food there is AMAZING!) this was awesome at first you do a walk through the trail and then they take you up on a ski lift and you go through the rain forest it was very relaxing and beautiful we saw monkeys and a tucan!
and the best trip we did was the Calypso Catamaran Cruise to Tortuga Island. This was absolutely the most amazing day. even the bus ride was scenic and beautiful. they drove us to Puntarenas where we picked up the boat, it was so peaceful riding over on the catamaran to the island all i can say about that is that it was like being on the set of Lost lol. so gorgesous. once we docked they set up a yummy buffet for us and had steel drums playing and then included were snorkeling, banana boats and beach volleyball - or just lounging out on the beach, the sun was really strong in June so we opted to lay in the shade in hammocks all afternoon sipping wine in the cool beach breeze, it was the perfect day! i highly highly highly recommend everyone have a day like this atleast once in their lifetime it was amazing!
if you plan to do any activities while your in San Jose keep in mind something we didnt realize, you need alot of time for pretty much everything. we thought we could do one excursion in the am and another at night or late afternoon and you really cant because of travel time from San Jose, also email your hotel before you book any excursions or activities we had really wanted to do the ATV through the jungle but didnt realize till we got there that they werent open in June because its the rainy season. Also we wanted to do white water rafting but just couldnt fit it in so that kinda bummed us out, so my advice is really plan out your time and allot for more time than the excursion even calls for since everything from San Jose takes alot of time to get too
Hope this info helps! sorry its so long but i can spend a week talking about how awesome Costa Rica is. My profile pic was actually taken from the San Jose City Tour i forget which museum it was but they had this incredible garden right in the middle of it.
