Create Your Own Invitations?

Has anyone attempted this? I see that Michaels has all wedding invitations on sale. A pack of 50 for $19.
Advice??

It's definitely a way you can save money, but do it only if you have a nice laser printer available.

Yeah I do have a good lazer printer and my fiancee is a graphic designer so he is good at that stuff...
I'm just not sure if I want to do it or not yet...

Anyone out there try it with invitations from Michaels?

I'd say for that price buy one pack and test it out, it could be sooooo worth it.

We are making our own as well. We are actually buying blank invites from C & J Papers and then printing them out at home. FH is also a graphic designer.

We did ours with an ink jet and they came out beautiful! If you don't mind the time involved, I'd say do it!

I'm using the paper for our menus. The samples came out great!

I had a realy hard time aligning the text on my computer. I think it may have been because either my version or word or windows is too new for the online templates. I used a computer that had an older version of word and windows and that did the trick.

ETA: If you're anywhere near a Christmas Tree Shops (Danbury, Rockland County and near New Haven) they have the kits at unbelievable prices.

I did it and I'm no graphic designer! Everyone said they came out great and look professional.

Re: Create Your Own Invitations?

im a graphic designer and definately considered doing our own invites... but im thinking it might be a lot easier to just order a simple design from one of the online places... I have seen a bunch of nice, elegant designs for under $100... and it includes all the extra stuff you need for the invites... doing invites ourselves will be very time consuming and you also have to consider the price of the ink cartridges, plus extras for mistakes... we are however, going to make our own programs, stds, newsletters and engagement invites....

hope this helps!

Re: Create Your Own Invitations?

i say go for it!

I bought the at-home printable kit to do my future sister-in-laws bridal shower invites--they invited 100 ladies! So i printed 125 to have extras for mistakes and keepsakes.

Let me say that they came out beautifully! Although i am an Art Director, i kept the design simple, because the paper had silver trim and hearts on the top, so the typography is what i really designed.

i saved a ton of money. i recommend it, if you have the patience to feed paper through the printer one by one. And if you know how to make a great Excel spreadsheet of the addresses, you can run the envelopes through too---i would also suggest that you print out mailing labels for the return address---get your wedding party to help you with it.

the 100 invites and envelopes took me about 2 hours to print and everything--it took longer to stuff them all!

good luck!

We ended up doing the same - I considered the DIY, but got inexpensive ones online. I wanted the inner envelope to make sure it was clear that certain children were not invited and no extra guests would be brought along. The DIY kits didn't have them and I also thought it would be a lot of frustration if things went wrong and I might end up spending the same $ if I made a lot of mistakes. We got 100 invites with inner envelopes, outer envelopes with return address printed on them, reception cards and response cards for under $180. With all the other stuff I had going on by the time we were going to do invitations, it was well worth the $

ETS: I did use the DIY programs from Michael's and they came out great!

Re: Create Your Own Invitations?

Hey-

I created my own invites. I ordered a sample invite I liked from a website. It was a envelopemnt-type invite and I wasn't crazy about the size of the ivite card. I was kinda small. SO i customized them for myself and printed them out myself on a inkjet. They look really professional-- I even shocked myself! I'm really picky so this was a big risk but I love the way they came out! I'll try to post a pic today--My school is closed cuz of the snow!

I recommend PaperDirect.com if you want to make you own. I have used they on several occasions. The paper quality is good and there are many different types to choose from.

Also, you can get free samples to see which you like best!!

I also say go for it! I found a paper I liked from Rexcraft and created my own design (really, the layout and mock-up) and sent it to them via Word document so all they had to do was print it on the paper I specified...then I did some more customizing, I couldn't be happier!
