Crosspost - Who to invite with a guest?
Friends of ours in their 20 and 30s who are single are not being invited with a guest. We are paying for 95% of the wedding ourselves and need to cut back in some places. Those in the wedding party and guests who are in a serious relationships will be invited with a guest, because we feel it is the right thing to do and appreciated the invite to other weddings when we were together but not yet engaged.
There are also no children invited to the wedding, except for the wedding party.
Now we seem to have a handful of family members who are ages ranging from 40 to 80 and are either single because they were never married or they are now widowed, and are not currently in a serious relationship. What is proper etiquette when inviting older relatives who are single? They are relatives who are pretty close to us - my mom, my godfather, an uncle, FH's grandmother, and then there is my mom's best friend, my mom's cousin, FH's dad's best friend...... I want to do the 'right thing' but I'm not sure where we can draw the line to try to save a little money.
Anyone else in a similar situation or have any advice??

we invited everyone with a guest but I think the serious relationship rule is fine, I know people who have done that. We didn't make cuts at the guest list we def cut out in other places though but the only reason I'd suggest that approach is because it's the only way to make back any money (assuming if ppl cover their plate plus give a little more) I kind of think of it like breakeven analysis lol but I use to be an accountant so part of me is still programmed to think of things in terms of money in and money out lol.

Anyone who is over 18 is invited with a guest. We are 32 and 33 which means a majority of our friends are also older, I couldn't imagine inviting them single but that's just my humble opinion.

I say use the same rule you are using for your friends for your family members.I am inviting my divorced aunt and she is not getting invited with a guest. I think it would be weird since she is not dating anyone. Also, since she is family, there will be plenty of people she knows at the wedding.

I agree with the 'serious relationship rule'...especially if you are paying for the majority of the wedding yourself. People will need to understand.

Were inviting most single people with a guest, the only people not invited with a guest are my grandma and grandpa (both widowed). We decided to give everyone the option, just because they're invited with a guest doesn't necessarily mean they will bring one.

I agree with everything you are doing, when it comes to older guests that are not in a relationship then no guest, specially since they are family and will know other people, the only reason we are inviting anyone in general with a guest that is single is if they don't know other people at the wedding...same boat as you with paying for everyone and having to limit, so i would use the serious relationships rule, and also keep in mind if they know everyone, so an aunt that is 40 and single will know your whole family and won't be sitting alone ya know...:)

Re: Crosspost - Who to invite with a guest?
Just about every one of our guests will be invited with a guest over the age of 18. The only ones that might not be is my FSIL's brother and FSIL's cousin. We do a lot of things as a group with them but right now, they are both single. Unless they start dating someone, we will likely not invite them with a guest and they will probably come together.

We are inviting everyone with a guest. Just because you are single doesnt mean you want to be alone at a wedding.I have been the single girl at wedding and its not fun when the couples go dance and you are left at a table alone. We are paying for our wedding but in the grand scheme of things with all the money we are spending a few hundred is not going to break us.

Only if fh or I have met the significant other are they invited. I'm not about to have 10 random people at my wedding bc I have 10 single friends. Those single friends can all be single together at the single table and have single fun.I'm NOT bending on it either. Sorry but when fh and I first started dating he went to two weddings without me. And I understood!
