Cruise to Canada

OK so we got our parents mini cruises to Canada as a wedding gift - and on expedia they recommend a passport. Um do they need a passport or a birth certificate for Canada - or is a drivers license ok? I just don't know if they have these items (well I know my 'rents do, but not his), and I hate to ruin the surprise
