culture and traditions

Ok so I'm west indian. Some of the traditions that I'm incorporating in my wedding is the jumping of the broom, dollar dance, and rum cake for guest to take home.

HOWEVER!

I absolutely adore bagpipers even though i'm not Irish. And my mom would love me to pieces if my FH would be willing to break glass and say 'Mazel Tov' (he won't) even though we're not Jewish. And I love the way henna looks on Indian brides.

Are there any other traditions and cultures that you admire? Would you be willing to incorporate them into your own wedding?

I am not Jewish but I would love to do the thing when they put you and FH in the chairs and lift you up. I think thats so much fun.

I am really not doing anything from my culture. I am Italian and German, as long as theres tons of food for the Italians and plenty of beer for the Germans, my family will be fine!

Uh Oh WEST INDIAN MASSIVE, we are few and far between on this board so welcome again!!! Where are you from? lol

My family is Trinidadian and Bajan but we are also Scottish and Portuguese so I am racking my brain trying to incorporate a myriad of elements together. FH's cake will of course be fruit cake and we will box that. When we booked our hall our BM wanted to know where we were from so we told her. Although we have like 6 or seven chafing dishes,we have a station that will have curry-something, peas and rice, plantains and stew chicken! She came up with this all on her own, she says that she loves fruit cake and Trinidadians, I my BM! She even threw in a tropical bar.

We West-Indians party regardless so long as the music is bumping right and there are some beers we are cool. Music is really important to us that's why we cannot go with a Long Island/wedding DJ because they will not know what they are doing, so we are having a close friend as our Dj to make sure that all the quintessential soca, calypso and reggae songs are played.

Back to the question:
So I will not be jumping the broom, it's an African-American tradition and most of our families would be so confused! I want to do the money dance, i think it's cool. I have a lot of Jewish friends that I grew up with so I am sure they will shout 'Mazel tov'. FH is Trinidadian and his dad is black and his mother is Indian so he's Dougla (sp?) and I would love to have Tassa drums at the wedding. Tassa is a main feature at Hindi weddings. I am debating whether or not to have steel drums, I grew up playing them, often at bar mitvahs and cocktail hours , but I just don't know. Half of the people at my wedding play steel drums so whether or not I want it , I am pretty sure a few people will carry their drums.

Sorry for the scripture, I'm on lunch!

Yayyy! My family is from Trinidad as well, but unfortunately i'm only half-trini, the other part is from here so that's where I get the jumping of the broom. I do understand your concern for an accomadating DJ that knows about soca, reggae, etc. That will probably be my hardest vendor to choose.

I am a first generation Italian so I will be incooperating italian music and dances as well as food. Alot of my family as well as FH family only speak italian so we are trying to have them also enjoy the party.
