CUSTOMS...JEWISH/ITALIAN Not wedding related , but need your help!

My sister is moving into her first house next week, and even though me and my FH got them a beautiful housewarming gift, we heard there is a custom , but do not know if it is Jewish, or Italian, where you give the couple, sugar for sweetness, etc. Does anyone know about this custom, and what other items are included in this. Thanks in advance!!

It's a mezzusah (not sure of spelling) that you hang on the door. A menorah is what you light on Hanukkah. As for the sugar, it is customary that before you move in to a new home you bring a box of sugar. I have also heard salt and a broom but I'm not sure why???

I think this is the saying....please anyone jump in if they know the correct words...

Its a loaf of bread...so you never know hunger
box of salt...so your life will have flavor...
cup fo sugar ....for the sweetness...
broom to sweep your troubles away...

It goes something like that!

good luck

Lisa Rose, I think you are correct in your wording, and my italian family uses it all the time when someone moves into a new home.

I guess it is Jewish/Italian and Greek. Maybe it is just an American custom???

I think it's in the movie 'It's a Wonderful Life'. In the middle of the movie, Donna Reed says something like that when the Savings & Loan help a family move in to a new home......!
