D of the D (Dilemma of the Day)

D of the D (Dilemma of the Day)

We can start a new regular thread, because I am sure we allll have D of the D's.

Here is mine:

My guest list is 15 people over the amount of people that will fit in my room. I know I have agonized over this for months, and everyone told me that I will get at least 15 no's, not to worry. But to a constant worrier, this is very troubling, especially paired with the fact that almost everyone invited is a CLOSE family member (aunts, uncles, first cousins) or very close friend. The room only holds 158 people and thus we didn't invite extraneous folks. We both have big families.

FMIL added 26 people to my nice-sized list a few months ago. They are all her father's bros/sisters and a few cousins. Now, we are not inviting anyone further than 1st cousins because we do not have the room. We picked the room because we love it and because we wanted the day to be celebrated with only those who were very important to us (or at least that was my thinking). So that's problem #1 - these are not people we know. However, FMIL feels they 'should get an invite.' She also says 'Don't worry, most of them will not come.' She thinks 4-10 of the 26 will come. If that's true, we have no problem.

If they DO come, we have issues. I don't expect a lot of no's from the rest of the list, again, because they are all VERY close family and friends. I KNOW some people will say no, but I just don't think it will be a lot. If we are over, either my RH will have to make room somehow (which I do not think they will do if it's a fire code issue) or someone's going to have to tell some folks 'Sorry, we made a mistake, you can't come.' And forever ruin any family ties there may have been to those people.

SO, I emailed FMIL (against FH's wishes, and without his knowledge, actually) and asked her to look at the list one more time since we are 15 people over, and if we do not get that many no's, 'we will be in a big bind.' I didn't dwell on it, just sent the list and asked her to look it over - esp. those who did not get STD's (more than half of the 26 extraneous folks).

FFIL left a message on our VM last night (which I heard this morning, FH didn't know about) in which he said that they got the list but can't open it. My email today had a message from FMIL, saying she got the pic of my niece I sent in the same email, but that they can't open the excel attachment - she thinks AOL 'reconfigured' something.

I think she is trying to ignore the issue, because why would they get one attachment and not the other? And ever since sending it, I feel like maybe I should just wait it out and trust her when she says they are not going to come. (All are older, some are very sick, on bed rest, and most live out of state.)

SO - here's the question - thanks to everyone who got this far! - should I drop it, or send it again? They live in FL and are coming here for a few weeks soon, but I did it via email because I am nervous for some reason and felt more comfortable not asking her in person.

TIA!!!!!

I would drop it. Especially if most them are older/out of state/in poor health, they probably won't come. Is your FH's family Italian? My dad was the same way--we had to invite all these cousins who mostly wouldn't come....and most of them didn't. Plus, there will be others who for whatever reason can't make it--things come up, people have other weddings, it happens. I don't think 15 over is too much. I know it seems like people are all really close, but you'll be surprised people who might say no!

I would drop it. The chances of you having your entire guest list RSVP yes (no matter how close they are) is slim to none. And if you say that the people your FMIL added to list are sick, old, and/or out of state than I definitely would drop it... she's probably sending them invites as a courtesey... something my FMIL did to an extreme (what a waste!). I'd let this one lie.

i would just let her know your concern once again and just tell her that in the event that u do go over it is the people she added that are going to get cut and she is going to have to be the one to do it, tastefully of course.

you are having a number issue due to the fact that she added people on that are not necessary.

i would simply explain to her that after sitting down with her additional 26 people, you have realized that you are dancing dangerously close to a fire code problem in your reception room.

some of the people are just going to have to come off.

also, please realize, there are CLOSE CLOSE CLOSE family members that aren't going to be able to make it, no matter what they say now, even if they got a STD.

My Godmother couldn't come, that KILLED ME, but her husband got laid off, and the cost of travel would've been too much...so it made sense, but i still, never for one second thought she wouldn't make it. Same thing with my parents' best friends...never, EVER thought they wouldn't be able to come, but life happens....

Nope, not italian at all. We don't have one drop of italian blood in either of us We are both stubborn Germans, however - maybe that explains it???

Thanks for your response. I just worry about this allll the time. I told myself a long time ago that if they DO say yes, I'll just tell FMIL and she will have to call them and un-invite them. Not my problem. But, I would of course like to avoid thay situation at all costs.

Is she paying for any of your wedding?

Yes - she did say 'they are not going to come, but we just feel they should get an invite.'

Thanks - this is what I have been leaning towards. I might just send her a new email that says, don't worry about it - but if you think of anyone that you know def. cannot travel, etc., let me know.

Yes, the band - which is a nice chunk - and this is why I have a problem addressing this issue with her. It's really NOT about the money, though - it's about the room's capacity.

This is so true--my mom's really good friends who were so excited for the wedding at the end of the day couldn't come b/c the woman's mother went into hospice and was day-to-day.....my really good friends from college couldn't come b/c my friend's fiance's sister was graduating from HS the next day in Maine.....things happen, even for people who you think would never miss it!

Thanks Jess

In the email I sent - which I know she read because she answered other questions I asked - I said that we are 15 people over, and if we don't get at least that many no's, we're in a bind. And I also stressed how I don't expect a lot of no's from the rest of the list because they are so close to us. SO, I would think she understands that. FH is very against me even discussing this - he thinks it's a non-issue - and therefore I can't tell her 'some people have to come off.' Unfortunately.

But the more people reassure me that I will get some no's, the better I feel about it.

I flip flop between being very worried about it and knowing it will work out.

It is fustrating but I would drop it. I mean you are going to get some no's. Not everyone will be able to attend for one reason or another

Everyone tells me this, so I guess I should just trust them, huh? I am such an analytical person, it is soooo hard for me to trust or understand things that I don't see in front of me or have explained. The idea of just trusting it will work out is very hard for me. But I know EVERYONE goes through this .... so I guess I am not alone ...

Just kidding darlin! I know what you meant. He is a nice catch if I do say so myself.

Yes, a beer festival can make you kinda drunkish. Especially for someone who loves any and all beer.

Have u maybe thought of doing a B list? Tell her, if you get enough no's those extras that she added to your list will get an invite, if not, sorry theres no room, you can't help that.
