So I have known for years that I am anemic but have always refused to take iron supliments or anything with iron in it because it makes me violently ill. Yesterday I get my blood work back and my doctor tells me I am 'dangerously' anemic and prescribes some heavy duty iron pills for me. I know I have to take SOMETHING because the next option is regular blood transfusions but does anyone take anything else for iron that is gentler on the stomach???????

Re: 'Dangerously' Anemic
i used to bee just a little anemic. i hated the pills...so my mom made me eat high-iron foods. green spinach, roast beef, etc....
maybe lookin to adding high-iron products to your diet.
They're chewable and taste good, easy on the tummy too.
ETA: You can usually find them in the Vitamin Shop.
Also up your iron-rich foods and pair them with something that has vitamin C. Like have a dark green leafy salad and top it with slices of oranges. It helps your body absorb the iron.

Re: 'Dangerously' Anemic
My old roommate had the same issue. She ended up going for transfusions every few weeks at NYU hospital. The process was time consuming and not necessarily pleasant. BUT she felt like a new person after the first series of treatments. She didn't realize how much the anemia had been effecting her. She had a significantly higher amount of energy after treatments. Initially, she was very frustrated with her diagnosis but over time she was much happier in general because she felt so much healther. I witnessed her health improve first hand because we were living together. The craziest part was that she didn't even realize how tired she had been because she was just used to pushing herself to keep going regardless of what her body was telling her. If you do end up going the route of the infusions, hang in there and buys some good books to read during your treatment sessions. It's not easy but I have seen the results drastically improve someone's life.

Try Geritol. Its old people vitamins and they work great on me. I have been taking them forever bc I am one of those lucky anemic people.

Re: 'Dangerously' Anemic
Thanks everyone!! You guys are awesome.
Kris I'm going to find those and try them and then go from there. I filled the prescription he gave me on my lunch and I'll try it for a day or so but I am pretty sure it'll be the same as before.
So my fingers are crossed that I can avoid the blood transfusions!!!

Re: 'Dangerously' Anemic
I am also very anemic and I have ITP (low platelets) as well. I was on Slow FE over the counter and they also made me sick. Now I take Fergon. They are also over the counter and I had no side effects!!! Good Luck!

Re: 'Dangerously' Anemic
whatever you pick to take... either take them with a meal or maybe with some milk at bedtime.
that way if they upset your tum you sleep through it.

I just take an iron supplement every other day. Can't take the side effects of taking them every day.
