Dating question...

Original post by BMD'sPeanut

Did anyone not go out with FH straight through from dating through marriage?

Meaning there was a breakup and a reuniting....

Did anyone see someone else during the break up?

Re: Dating question...

We started dating in 7/99 broke it off in 10/00 for about 7 months til 6/01 or so. Kinda of saw each other on and off for two months until 9/11/01 when we officially ( meaning we told our families and friends we were back). Since 9/11/01 we have been together.almost every day an almost every night!

It weird I heard a lot of people either reunited or started dating around 9/11/01. I guess things like that day really make you rethink some of your relationships.

Re: Dating question...

We had met about a year before we started going out. We would hook up, date casually, then lose touch for a bit (he is four years younger than me so he was like 22 years old when this was going on.
Once we started going out - he broke up with me (and broke my heart ) a little more than 4 months in. We got back together about 6 weeks later when he was all crying and saying he made worst mistake in his life. Two years later - to the day!!! - he put a ring on my finger.

Re: Dating question...

We've had alot of breaks during our dating years (even one major break-up of six months when we were 1st engaged). I would always begin to date immediately, I don't know why. I guess to boost my self esteem or to 'prove' to him life would go on without him. I dated one guy the whole six months we were apart during our engagement, but a few months into it, we contacted each other and started 'sneaking around' (long, long story but we didn't want anyone to know that we were hanging out, etc. due to embarrassment over calling off wedding or having our families 'disapprove', etc.). I didn't know what I wanted because the guy I was dating went from the world's greatest prince to an absolute toad in a matter of six weeks. I wonder if things would be different or if the outcome would be the same if the guy had remained the nicest guy in the world....I have no regrets kicking him to the curb because I wouldn't be where I am in my life right now.

No one ever understood me the way my husband has and we always gravitated back to each other after each break-up. Even during trying moments in our marriage (and yes, there have been many) and on the darkest days of our life together, we always found our way back to each other. But he knows in his heart that if everything ended tomorrow, I would have the strength to go on and he never takes advantage of the fact that I can and will resume my life - without him because after all, life is too short to be alone. It's not a matter of not loving him enough, it's about loving yourself more, to not let someone control your life so completely. When we first dated, he was my entire world and I fixated everything in my life around him. He knew that and took advantage of that many, many times. He would often treat me like garbage and I would come back for more because he'd give me just enough to keep me hanging on. These days, the tables are turned and he is more appreciative of me and our 'quality time' together. It's nice to finally be on the receiving end than always on the giving end. It's a more balanced love (and life) than it has ever been in my 10 years with him.

Re: Dating question...

We broke up for 2 months, a month after going out. I'm the one who initiated it becase I wanted to pursue feelings I had for someone else. THAT was a mistake and (THANKFULLY) DH was still waiting in the wings.

He calls the time after that 'post-dump' and that first month 'pre-dump'
I'm glad that he can take it all in stride withough holding mt lack of judgement against me.

Wow, other than dating someone else, your story is real similar to mine. We first got together in Dec-96 and have had our ups & downs, on & off ...

Re: Dating question...

We've been together for nearly 7 years, and aside from a briegf, 2 day break-up, it's been straight through. Being from San Diego, we've also had to spend a lot of time apart... 3 months every summer while I was an undergrad! And we'll spend another 4 months apart beginning at the end of this month! But, the breaks always make for great reunions! ;o)

Re: Dating question...

We broke up twice. Once for 5 months, once for three months. Neither one of us dated anyone seriously during that time (that we know of). It was a very long time ago, we don't talk about it.

For me it will be 7 months in April! We only took a 2 hour break around the 3 month mark (that was in High School).

Re: Dating question...

We broke up for 5 months. We both had a date or two but nothing serious. In the end we realized that breaking up was the best thing that could have happened. It made us realize how important we were to each other and how we never wanted to be apart again

Re: Dating question...

FH and I were friends for 2 1/2 years and were on the verge of dating when we both got cold feet and start telling each other that it would ruin our friendship (secretly hoping that the other would put up a fight and say 'no, it wouldn't). FH decided to date a friend of mine because he thought I wouldn't date him. I got horribly offended and told him I was uncomfortable with him dating her and I wouldn't be able to be around them in the beginning stages of the relationship because I hate watching people fawn all over each other. We stopped talking for 10 months. He tried to get in touch with me and after contemplating it, I finally gave in and resumed talking to him, a few months later we started to date and we have been together ever since.
