Day Care Costs

If approx. 1/2 your salary would be going to daycare costs, is it worth it to go back to work or just stay home?

I think we can stretch it and be able to live on my husbands salary but I don't want him to be under all that pressure.

What is everyone planning to do?

That is my situation EXACTLY. I cant see spending half of my salary on day care so I dont think Im going to keep my job. I think Im going to find something part time and make it work.

My issue is what to do about leaving. Should I quit before my due date or while IM out on disability. Or should I come back after dis. and quit.

Re: Day Care Costs

Disability? Is that like Maternity leave? My maternity leave is unpaid but I can use sick time and comp time for it. I only have about 3 months saved up but it will have to do.

Re: Day Care Costs

I think if you can make it on his salary, then go for it and stay home! When I was on maternity leave I tried everything with our budget to see if I could stay home, and unfortunately it would just not work out. Mostly because I have the medical, 401K, stock, etc. I cut it down so much that we would only have one car but we wouldn't have been able to buy the gas for the car-lol!
I think everyone does what is best for their family and if you and your husband talk about your budget, I'm sure you will come to a conclusion of what would be best for you.

Re: Day Care Costs

This is exactly the dilemma I am going through right now.. I want to be a SAHM, but I don't know if that is going to be fair to DH, placing the financial burden on him.
I work at hofstra and daycare here is 1/2 my salary... It seems like a big waste.. Why would I work for 1/2 the amount of $ I was making before the baby? I already complain that I am not making enough $!!!

Re: Day Care Costs

I think what we are going to do is have me stay home for as long as possible and then I'll go back to work part-time. Hopefully if I can work at night my DH would be able to take care of the baby and then we wouldn't have to pay for daycare.

We'll see how it turns out.
