I was hoping I could ask for your opinion on a Day Engagement Party and if anyone ever had one and how it was.
My mother wants to throw us a party in her backyard in June. She wanted to start the party at 2pm. I am trying to get her to start later and the latest she'll go is 4pm.
I just feel that a day engagement party is kind of lame and could be boring. Has anyone else had a day party? How did you feel about it being in the daytime? How can I make it seem more elegant and romantic for a day party?
Thanks everyone!

I have been to all kinds of parties -- I don't think the time of day is the factor as much as the atmosphere. Usually a backyard party will be less formal/elegant unless you go all out (rented tent, servers/waiters, etc). It really depends on the space and what you do with it.
I have been to very formal/elegant afternoon parties, and very casual afternoon parties. If what you want is formal/elegant you would probably be better off at a hall.

We had a day party --- a sit-down luncheon at an Italian restaurant. We rented out the place and everyone had a great time.
However, I wasn't looking for formal/elegant -- I didn't want a mini wedding with a DJ at a hall, etc. I wouldn't say our party was casual, somewhere in the middle.
How formal do you have in mind?

Re: Day Engagement Party??
I just always envisioned it to be under a tent at night lit with white lights and candles, not a casual daytime backyard get together.
We always do this for the kids birthday parties and it's getting old and boring. I want it to be fun, and I'm nervous it's just going to be another boring backyard party. I just don't know how to make it a little more elegant and formal during the day.

I agree that it's harder to do backyard formal during the day, especially if you are relying on lights and candles to set the mood. Is your mom totally not flexible with respect to time?
I've been to a bunch of backyard parties and none of them were ever formal, even if they had servers and music. The tent would help, but they can be pretty expensive. You might be better off having it somewhere other than your backyard which would add to the formality?

My parents are probably doing a backyard party. Honestly, just work on little details with your mom- think of a 'garden party' you can make it really nice if you work with your mom.

I had a brunch engagement party. It was 12-4 and then a bunch of people came back to my house. We had a dj and drinks and it was soooo much fun!

Re: Day Engagement Party??
My engagement party was at a restaurant on a sunday during the day last august....I am not sure that I agree that the time of day makes any difference...especially for an e-party...JMO...I think your mother's idea sounds lovely

I think that its very nice that your mother has even offered to throw you an engagement party...Neither one of our parents even offered to have an e-party for us. I would say to have it during the afternoon and have it be like a brunch...serve bloody marys and mimosas..that will make it more elegant...But either way you are very lucky that your mother even offered to throw you are party and should be grateful for this...

Re: Day Engagement Party??
We had ours at FH's parents house in their backyard (my parents hosted tho). It was really nice. They have a HUGE yard so we were able to do it up with a tent and a bar and DJ, etc. I wouldnt exactly call it 'formal' but we had over 100 people and it started at 3 and went until at least 10/11 pm at night. The one great thing about outdoor parties is you arent as constricted with the amount of people and you can have it at any time for as long as you like. My parents offered to have it at a restaurant or a catering hall but ultimately, this is what we wanted and we had a GREAT time.
ETA - By the way - ours was on June 9th.

Well said Christine ! As we both know, paying for an E-party *****. I would give ANYTHING for one of our parents to even offer their stupid garage to hold something in our honor. Im going to pay for this stupid formal one but Im gonna wait for the summer to throw myself another E-party...but this time on my pool deck w. a Keg and boxed wine godam it!!! LOL

Re: Day Engagement Party??
If I could continue to party with my friends till at least 10p-11pm at night, then I wouldn't mind at all! But she has stressed that she does not want the party to be all night - that means 11pm, and she is extremely worried that someone will drink and drive leaving her house making her liable - which leads into the reason she told me that I have to stay sober making sure that everyone that is driving is sober. So it would be a 4 hour party and then it would be over. And I would have to stay sober at my own engagement party! This is a big part of my 'boring backyard party' dilemma
Thank you all for your input and great pointers. I am trying to find a fair compromise and you are all helping me to do so! Thanks!
Any more suggestions?

Re: Day Engagement Party??
If you don't mind me asking- how old are you? I'm assuming you are over 21 and all of your friends are right? Then they should be responsible enough to attend a party and have someone sober drive them home. I understand your mom is worriedsince she is hosting, but it isn't like you are throwing a party for 18 yr olds! (well i don't think you are)
You should be able to have a few cocktails to enjoy yourself! If you friends are in their 20-30's they should know when they shouldn't be driving home. i know 11 PM is 'early' but honestly, drinking during the day is the best anways! ha ha
