Debate

Re: Debate

My FH is a high school math teacher. He also has NO interest in politics, so when I watch this stuff and rant and rave, he usually hides in the other room, which I admit, is probably wise.

When I heard the part about soldiers coming home and going directly into the classroom without having to take the classes 'and get all the certificates', I ran out of the room and made him watch.

I find it hard to fathom that anyone could disrespect the work it takes to be a teacher to such a degree. I'm all for the soldiers, but like any profession, they are not all rocket scientists. I understand McCain has a special affinity for military personnel, but this was simply unbelievable.

My favorite line of the night:

Sarah Palin is a role model for all women.

I was so unbelievably offended that anyone could make such an insane and sweeping generalization. I don't think women are electoral sheep who just follow vagina. She could not be more diametrically opposed to everything I believe in. To imply that simply because she is a woman running for high office, that I should revere and respect her, is sexist, disgusting, and out of touch. I cannot get over the fact that this person made rape victims pay for their own rape kits. I don't understand how that can be supported by anyone. I mean, I really do respect the views of all voters, and even if you are voting for McCain and understand and relate to his platform, I wholeheartedly applaud your views and hope you vote. I cannot understand how this practice can be supported by anyone.

Re: Debate

This is another way McCain wants to deregulate by taking away exams that determine whether a teacher is qualified to teach. Next he will take away the bar exam and the medical boards. Lets let all our military people be exempt for determining whether they are qualifed for certain careers and just give them to them.

Also, my other favorite of the night was when McCain made the statement he will not appoint anyone to the Supreme Court who supports Roe V. Wade...Get that right girls...he said it loud and clear. He WILL NOT support Roe V. Wade which means he will appoint justices that are against women's choices.

Oh. forgot one other detail.. He keeps mention Sarah Palin is an example of someone who knows all about special needs children because she has one of her own..but lets get this straight McCain...Her child does NOT have Autism, he keeps mentioning Autism...he has down syndrome.

Ladies do realize your freedoms are at stake with this man and his running mate. Our economy will not be flouishing anytime soon with either candidate but our human rights do need to be protected.

Re: Debate

I watched it last night and was completely infuriated by much of it. I am just so jaded and sick of it all...

that being said- I am all for Obama.

Things have got to CHANGE.

I am sure he will make mistakes like all politicians do. I am sure he is not completely truthful, as most politicians aren't. But- I know that more of the same will not work. And to me, when it comes down to do it- McCain will not be different ENOUGH.

ALL the teachers were riled up about this at work today. i mean people who haven't given a cr@p this whole time. i think he really shot himself in the foot with this. it really is the total epitome of a politician who claims to know how to fix education but is so out of touch when it comes to the classroom that it's obvious he has no idea. the voucher system? working? the voucher system has a long history of sinking struggling schools, raping neighborhoods with the least of desperately needed funding, widening the achievement gap, and sinking property values. and then--in order to get 'bad teachers a new line of work'--he wants to put inexperienced people who have no understanding of how people learn in a classroom with a bunch of amercan teenagers who do nothing but play video games and text each other and therefore have zero attention span? holy cow, i had no idea he was THAT clueless--big disappointment last night.

then you said this: 'I don't think women are electoral sheep who just follow vagina.' and i fell in

Re: Debate

again im going to say that no matter who wins ... they are both going to make mistakes and they are both not going to be able to solve the economic crisis in a couple of months or even in a couple of years.

I dont like everything about either one of them ... they both want change ... they both say they are going to change things...its really annoying because its one guys word against another. i guess you just have to vote for the person that you believes and stands up for the issues that you do!

I agree, i dont like either. And I HAATE to hear how neither are taxing anybody, neither will cut programs but they will start all these new programs and neither has a clear cut plan for the crisis we are in now. WOW how realistic. We just gave 700 billion to these corporations and you are saying no higher taxes? really then what is going to happen, bc correct if i am wrong but don't we the tax payers pay for all these things. So add another 700 billion to the deficit and dont get money back in any other way but also start a bunch of new programs and dont cut anything.

THat is why even during the debates, they were asked if their plans are realistic bc they had economic specialists look over everything they were saying and did calculations and it is NOT realistic. After the show they did the truth squad thing and guess what, with either candidate our deficit will grow.

It sounds all great and exactly what people like to hear, but its very unrealistic

F*CK the system GO NADER

I brought this up with my co-teacher, who I don't get along with, and he said he thought it was a great idea. I tried debating it with him and I couldn't get him to agree that this is a terrible idea. He also loves McCain, so I don't know if that biased him into agreeing with his statement, but come on!!!

when we were talking about this at work some of my coworkers were under the impression that McCain meant having military personnel teach trades that they had done before entering the military...not coming and teaching 1st grade ya know? What did he mean exactly?

Are you referring to my co-teacher? If so, my co-teacher thought it was great for the military to not have to take the tests because the tests are a waste of time and don't prove anything. He said it is basic knowledge. My response was if it is basic knowledge, don't you think teachers should have basic knowledge? It is especially important for the upper grades to have a grasp of the curriculum. Many of the questions on the tests relate to information that we teach to our students. Also, I would surely want all teachers to be able to pass the ATS-W!

if he's talking about waiving certification exams, how could he be talking about anything but public education? in that case, how is hiring inexperienced people with no filtering system to weed out the unqualified a way to 'get bad teachers a new line of work?' it just seems incredibly strange and half-baked; he blurted it out in the midst of a tantrum he was having at the end there so it was thus insufficiently explained.

Re: Debate

Just an update on this..

Did you guys hear that Joe the Plumber's name's not even Joe? Also, he's not a licensed plumber. There's a bunch of other stuff they found out (like his salary and who's plan he said he'd do better under, but I'm trying hard to resist being partisan- it's too damn early).

This poor b**stard- he unwittingly gets dragged into not even the public eye, but the international media glare. Now they're digging through his records and have discovered that he hasn't paid taxes and all this other stuff. And he has the media camped out on his lawn.

The thing that kills me about this is, this was the last debate. The election is in just a bit more than two weeks. There are serious differences between these two candidates. The economy is falling apart. People are losing their homes and their jobs.

And all the media can do is talk about Joe the Plumber and put HIS life under a microscope?

Oh, I'm going to throw up. Again, I request a vomit smiley.

Re: Debate

Going back to the education bit. He was specifically talking about public education and the reason we need these certification exams is exactly for the upper grades. I am a business teacher. I have had THREE of my former student teachers complete their masters program but not be able to pass the content part of the LAST's. I have even spoken to Hofstra about not accepting students into the Masters program before they have past the content portion of the LAST, why have them waste their money if they do not grasp the subject matter.

Most of the military personnel are getting their college degrees online, not to say they are not getting in education, but if they are so competent to teach, they should have no problem passing these exams. I don't know about most of you but I certaintly don't want to be up in front of a physics or calculus class.

Re: Debate

Hope this doesn't come across the wrong way but I do support McCain (fair disclosure :) and I think what he is trying to say is when these soldiers come home, have jobs for them and they can work towards certification. For instance,at Catholic schools, you don't need the same qualifications you need in the public school system initially but you need to working toward them. I honestly think his ideas was a noble one - not to take any qualified teachers job away - but to allow some people who have had some really incredible life experiences enter the work force in a job where they can make a difference.
