You guys should write all of this down! I'm sure that your grandchildren will want to know all of this history!
I totally agree. It's something very interesting and special to their herataige. It must've been hard on you and your husband but It's wonderful he made the choice that's right for him.

Mary, this is very interesting! I went to school in central PA where there are a lot of menonites - do you know the difference? I know religion is different, but do you know the differences in how they live their lives? I saw a lot of Menonites at Walmart - they arrived via horse and buggy - I found it odd that they shopped in the Walmart, buying shampoo and soap and what not. The Amish make all their own soap, right? Would love to know anything you know about the differences.

I hope this doesn't sounds like a stupid question but how were those photos taken of the amish classroom. I was under the impression they were not allowed to be photographed, am I wrong?
You're absolutely right, Michelle. The Amish do not like to be photographed; I just called my Husband and asked where the pics came from. He said when the pic of the school children was taken, they were attending a Mennonite, not Amish school, and a Mennonite teacher took both of the school pics I have. I only posted one in this thread. Ben said the children don't care if their picture is taken, only the parents care. Also, I think it makes a difference whether the picture is far away of a whole group or close up, showing individuals. Ben said, as an adult, he didn't care that the pic was taken of him. My guess is he was at that point, already making some changes in his thinking, since he left the Amish at age 25. Mary MOB

Jennifer, there are many types of Mennonites. Some drive horse and buggy, some drive cars/trucks with black bumpers painted because they think it''s worldly to have chrome, and some drive cars like non-Amish. While there are some theological differences, I think most of the differences between the Mennonites and Amish are in what each deems, 'worldy'. The Amish do not think they should be photographed because of the Commandment in The Bible, about not having any graven images. I always found it fascinating that the Amish dress very plainly, etc., but in their homes, they have china cupboards and sideboards, etc., covered with fine china, and knick knacks. They have wooden floors covered with rag rugs, not wall to wall carpet, although the younger generations are really modernizing, with big beautiful houses, no longer adorned with green pull down shades, but with curtains, and indoor plumbing. I wonder when the Amish schools will abandon outdoor facilities. The children only attend school until the 8th grade. But some must have a thirst for learning, because Ben's Brother, who's in his 60's, told us of the history books he purchased, for his niece, I think. I'll ask Ben about that, tonight. One of our Amish nieces taught Amish school. The children and parents adored her so much, each Christmas, she received beautiful pieces of furniture, as gifts from the parents and children, which she showed us, in a room of her parents' house, awaiting the day she would be married. I could be mistaken, but I think the Amish buy soap like you and me. Mary MOB

Katerina, he has always been in the building profession, and worked for other builders, until 1970, when he went into business himself. When he left the Amish, he went to a Beachy Mennonite Church, and lived with an elderly lady from that Church. The Beachy Mennonites, dress plainly but not as much as the Amish. They drive cars, etc.
Have to go to a Dr. appt., but when I return, I'll show you pics of the Beachy people. Mary MOB
