Mary, I give your husband a lot of credit. I'm sure that wasn't easy for him to do. He sure has a great wife It almost sounds like people that left Europe for the US. They basically start with nothing and it's scary.

Well, when Debi was 4months old, my Husband's Mom passed away. If she would have lived, things might have been a bit different. When we married, we invited my Husband's family, but only a few came. His Father for sure didn't come, since he was a preacher, and had to make a display of shunning DH, I guess!! After our wedding, we took cake and flowers to his parents. His Mom was very sweet to me, hugging me, initially, but after a time, she just shook my hand. When I asked DH why the change, he thought his Dad had told her not to hug me, 'because Amish women are only suppose to hug Amish women, not non-Amish.' Later, when DH's youngest Brother married an Amish girl, who had been exposed to the outside world more, DH and I went to visit them. As we greeted each other, remembering what happened with my MIL, I was trying to shake my SIL's hand, while she tried to hug me!!!! I chuckled as I said, 'Sara, I don't know what to do!!' She said, 'We're Sisters and we're suppose to hug!!' Unfortunately, Sara, in later yrs. must have heard from the powers that be, that she must only shake my hand!! As far as my FIL, he made little stools for our children, but they broke. Amish men don't make a fuss over their Grandchildren, at least not my FIL. Thankfully, my Husband was a great Dad, very affectionate, and attentive to his children, and still is. Mary MOB

Michelle, my Husband knew the consequences when he left the Amish, but I was very hurt for him when his Father died, and we asked his lawyer to send us a copy of the will, since no one offered to show it to us. In the will, each child was mentioned by name and the item to be given, but when FIL got to my Husband, he said, ' As for my son, Benjamin, I leave nothing' It hurt to read those words, but we forgive and understand those are the ways of the Amish. Yes, I am! I wish that I had as rich a family history as you! I 'm sure that my grandparents had interesting things to tell... but no one kept any permanent records, save for recipes. Its a shame. I'm so glad that you've written all of this down!

Originally I chose theatre. I found that I was a crying mess every time I didnt get a part in a show. Writing was something that came natural and that I'd always enjoyed doing when I was younger, so I kinda sorta fell into it... as for teaching... well, what else can you do with a degree in Literature? I decided to teach college b/c I don't like children.

Teaching younger students is not easy; I was in Future Teachers of America, and had occasion to test drive the career; I was sooo frustrated!!!! I didn't know the secrets of keeping a class from going haywire!!! It left me drained!! I never participated in school plays, but one time, I dressed like a clown, to take a birthday treat into school for one of my kiddos, and I loved the anonymity and being someone other than myself. It was fun!!! Mary MOB
