I know, I should have added, that I could never have given up my kitty! As many scars that she gave me, I loved that crazy cat! (I was scared of her, but loved her anyway!!!)
I had her from when I was about 8 until my sophomore year of college-and cried like a baby when she passed......

Re: declawing cat ?
cP: Just to be clear - im all for fixing pets. I just dont understand the concept how its not cruel to remove their reproductive organs but its so creul to remove their nails. (The owners motivation to fix a pet might be b/c the pet will not menstruate or go into heat when fixed as well as live longer. ) Anyway - just my opinion is all.
Erica; My cat used to be the most evil cat in the world. I have scares all over my legs from his 'playing' until we finally decided to get him declawed. However, when we got cat #2, my first cat b/c the absoulute sweetest thing. He never scratces or bites anymore and is always wanting to be next to us and be pet. I dont know the exact reason why cat #2 inspired such a personality change but we are still amazed.

Re: declawing cat ?
thanks for all the suggestions...
I guess I should try softpaws first...to see how they work...I don't want her to be in pain (even though she doesn't mind me being in pain ) and I don't want her euthanized...
but people are scared of her when they come over (b/c of our stories) and then she always wants to sit next to people...
I will try to go around declawing...but I am considering the laser one...

Probably b/c declawing is not just simply the removal of nail - it removes bone as well. (Opposers liken it to removing your nail and the tip of your finger.) There are a lot of nerve endings in their nails - it's apparently very sensitive to most, if not all cats. So with that knowledge, I would imagine it would be painful to have bone removed as well.

Really? How so?
ETA - oh, the nerve ending part? Cause you can't mean the bone part...that whole bone(r) thing is just slang.

Re: declawing cat ?
Yes, I understand the specifics of the operation. Based on my cats behavior after the surgery, it doesnt seem like they are in any pain at all. But I cant say for sure of course.
However, after I had my female cat fixed she was hoping around for a few days. From what I understand, fixing of a female animal is quite extensive surgery and requires more recovery time.
In each surgery, they were back to them old selves in a very short period of time. But that has just been my experience.
Erica: its funny you mention circumsion b/c thats such a similiarily debated topic.

Re: declawing cat ?
Sonicstef is right, female spaying is WAY more extensive than neutering (tie off and snip!).

It's a matter of opinion, I guess Stef. I really don't know what you were getting at with your questioning...I just answered with my opinion.
I totally agree with the difference in spaying & neutering.

Re: declawing cat ?
I guess I am concerned with our cat b/c she has been through a lot...
I'm a little nervous about the softpaws (but they are worth a shot) b/c when we cut her nails its not a pleasant experience...

CP: Im so lost - what question did i ask?
Erica: I hope your kitty is okay no matter what you decide. Maybe she will just get less aggressive as she ages?

Re: declawing cat ?
If your nervous, have your vet put on the SoftPaws, don't do it yourself, especially if she shreds you already.

now that shes 6 how would she react to surgery?
I'm not sure if 6 is the cutoff age, but vets will run a series of tests to ensure that the cat is healthy enough to have surgery.
I'm sorry you have to make these decision...

Re: declawing cat ?
For Morton- my boy cat- I can't even trim his claws because he will shred me- one time he scratched me in the face... the little devil.
so the vet always has to trim his claws.
Your cat sounds like my old Pussycat (that was her name) she was such a BIATCH

Re: declawing cat ?
I know this sounds crazy, but have you talked to your vet about behavioral modification drugs, such as Doxepin or Fluoxetine (generic prozac)? They're used on cats with anxiety or depression. I'm not completely against declawing, but with what she's been through, I think I would only do that as a last resort.

Re: declawing cat ?
This discussion reminds me of a conversation I recently had with my cat-loving friend! She says that declawing is very cruel! I say: darling, you cut off your cat's b alls and didn't think it was cruel but you think removing their nails is cruel?? Ask any man about what he would pick and that's going to be the answer to that question!
We had a good laugh! She never did declaw the cat and all her furniture is scratched up, but she uses it as an excuse to never buy anything nice and expensive for the house!
