Deep Fried Turkey???

Anyone ever do it? Is it really as unhealthy as it sounds like it should be? Does it taste better than a turkey cooked in the oven?

Re: Deep Fried Turkey???

Oooh, I've heard of people doing it, but never tried it myself. It's supposed to come out really juicy. Does sound super unhealthy, but I don't think that it is really too bad...sorry I can't help more.....

Re: Deep Fried Turkey???

My parents fry a turkey every year. Everyone says it's yummy (I don't eat turkey so I don't have first hand experience). It stays super-moist b/c the temp is so high that the turkey cooks really quickly. At the same time, b/c it cooks so quicky the oil doesn't really penetrate into the meat, so as long as you take the skin off it isn't really any less healthy than putting it in the oven.

Re: Deep Fried Turkey???

Yes, I've had it before and it is very moist and yummy. It's just that the deep fryer can be very sloppy and splatters, I've seen people fry them with tons of newspaper under the fryer on the ground for splattering and you need a lot of oil and you have to make sure the fryer is not in a tight spot where things might catch on fire.

Re: Deep Fried Turkey???

It is the best! And yes they make special fryers for them. They are a pain to store and clean but the turkey is just wonderful. You really have to do it outdoors and not on anything (like a deck) that might get ruined if oil gets on it. We recycle our oil for about 3 turkeys by putting it through a cloth strainer and we use it very quickly.
