I was always under the impression that they wore their special uniform AFTER they graduated, you know, when they were officially in the Navy.
If that's not the case, then I can totally see both sides of this. Maybe he could wear it for one part and not the other (like for the church but not the reception or other way around)? How does your brother feel about it?
technically you are right. But the thing is according to FH and the Marines but since hte Marines are part of the Navy it might go for them as well:
they are not really supposed to be wearing their uniform out anywhere except if they are attending a Marine Corps function, or if they are instructed to do so by the commanding officer, or if they are doing recruiting leave (which means they are home on leave and helping out the recruiting officers by getting people to join the military)
just an FYI haha
but i think fh you and your brother should all talk about it and how it makes you all feel. and no decision is the wrong decision in this case to me!
that is what i thought about the marines and wearing dress blues as well.....ive known quite a few over the years....

09 crasher here...
when my cousin got married her brother (who was also a groomsman) wore is navy tux. i really dont think anyone thought twice about it or though it was odd and it certainly didnt take away from the bride and groom. one thing for your brother to think about if he wears it...my cousin did get pretty drunk that night and completely trashed the uniform...i think he had to replace it.

i have to be honest.
This is something i have seen before in weddings & there is no way on earth possible to take attention away from the bride & groom.....it's your day & people know that.
I personally would allow him to wear it because it means so much to him & your father....and also because i've seen it and it's not an issue..

just out of curiousity, what do women in the marines and navy wear? what if it was a bridesmaid who wanted to wear her navy 'dress blues' -- would you feel differently?

I think it's kind of crazy that Fh thinks that. Your brother is your brother, and everyone there know what his accomplishments are. He should wear the navy tux, and be proud of it!
I went to a wedding last summer with a similar situation. The bride's brother was in the marines. If he wasn't wearing the uniform, we would have thought that was strange. Her husband was not worried at all if he would take some of the attention away from him.
I don't think you can say that you think it is crazy for her fh to feel that way. I know I would not want one of my bm's to be waering something different from everyone else.
If wearing your dress blues is not mandatory than there really is no reason that he HAS to wear it to his sisters wedding. Maybe he should save it for his wedding.
People forget that it is the guys wedding also and I would not want people to disreguard what I felt so how could I do that to my fh. I think you ABSOLUTELY have to take fh's feelings into consideration
haha that is what i was trying to say jess! she has every right to take it into consideration. and like someone said he isnt the groom. and as i said they are NOT mandatory to wear to formal events that are not affliated with the military!

I said I think it's crazy for Fh to THINK that, not feel that way. Meaning...he shouldn't think that anything can take away from him as the groom.

i would let my brother wear it. i dont think it will take away from FH at all. thats sort of like when someone else wears white to the wedding - nothing takes the spotlight off the bride on that day and nothing will take the spotlight off your FH that day either. that being said, it is you and your FH's wedding and i think you have the right to do what you want. I personally dont see the big deal in having your brother wear it. I would love that special touch.

Thanks ladies for your thoughts! i am going to talk to FH again, and also to my brother.....my father is just way too pushy about this (among other things...) that i sort of blurs how i really feel about things....i dont want to make the wrong choice to spite my dad. I am going to delete the original post to to avoid potential lurkers...

I agree with the other posters that nothing will take away from your day. Everyone there invited knows exactly who the bride and groom are. I've seen people in uniform at weddings and it never took any attention away. The most I saw was people thanking the person in uniform for serving our country. I don't think that would take any attention away. Also ask your brother how he feels about the issue. If it were my family member I would want them to wear their uniform. These men and women are the reason our country is so great, they make a huge sacrifice so we can live our lives!

everyone has the right to their opinion so please dont think i am bashing yours.
but they are NOT required to wear them actually they technically shouldnt be. and he is not the groom it is not his formal event. and like i said about my fh friend who is a groomsman he will be wearing his blues at the reception only out of respect to FH. maybe if there were more marines in our bridal party it wouldnt bother us so much but we asked and he said OK.

Not to beat a dead horse...and I'm not totally sure you are referring to my post, but I did not say they are required:
I just think it wouldn't take away from the groom!

yeah, i guess part of this whole ordeal is that...it does bother me a little bit that FH thinks that
I can kind of guess the situation based on the responses. It definitely won't take away from you and FH! I promise you that. When my cousin got married a few years ago his brother was one of the BMs and he wore his Navy uniform. He was introduced as Officer so and so too. It was really nice and didn't take away from the bride and groom. So tell FH not to worry!
