if you already sent invitations it would be kinda rude to uninvite them... imo, awkwardness isnt really that big of a deal... as it is these people are going to be your family this could be their chance to remove the awkwardness

I agree, if you already invited them, then it's out there. And what if they find out? Or assume you and FH are having troubles with the relationship and start spreading gossip?

I don't think you can uninvite them if the invitations are already out.

Idk if u can uninvite them. In my opinion I wouldn't. If word got out somehow that the engagement dinner did wasn't cancelled itd be an ugly situation..

I really don't think you can uninvite them, especially since you sent out invitations. Can you see if the restaurant has small party packages that will limit what people can order so the bill doesn't get out of hand? If you're THAT concerned with the money maybe change the restaurant to somewhere less costly but you can't just tell people that they can't come. If you tell them it was canceled and they find out it wasn't (people could easily slip up and mention it at the shower, wedding, etc) it's not going to look good.
Also, why don't you invite both of your parents to your place or out for dinner so they can get to know each other a little before the engagement party?

I wouldn't uninvite anyone who already got invitations. How awkward would it be if they found out that it wasn't really cancelled?

Yes, it would be rude to renig the invitation and even worse if you lie and they find out about it. I wouldn't worry about the awkwardness, everyone expects it and most get around it. You can make it fun and take charge of the seating, strategically placing ppl with common interests or personalities near each other.
