I think it's a give-in that if you're invited somewhere for an exquisite dinner or celebration of any kind, especially a wedding, you come bearing gifts. Are most of her friends college age? it could be that they couldn't afford a gift, but then why go to a wedding?

Re: The non-gifters?
what...that is terrible!!! we had a few no-gifters after the wedding (maybe 15 out of 203) but we got gifts within the month from most. as of now there are 6 that still didnt send gifts. its frustrating and just plain wrong!!! i hope she gets gifts...50% is not acceptable!

Re: The non-gifters?
i think that is high-- out of my 180 guests i didn't receive a gift from one person in my bridal party and one from my roommate.... there were people who mailed gifts to our hourse after the wedding and didn't give a card so right out of the gate it appeared that there was a lot more non-gifters... some also forget to put the card in the card box and dropped them off or mailed them after the wedding... but to not receive anything from 50% of your guests is not normal

I agree with all of the above. That's crazy! How do you go to a wedding and not give a little something? I know times are hard for everyone, but then you shouldn't be going to the wedding in the first place just for the free food, ya know??

Is it normal for a bridal party attendant not to give a gift?? I dont know what the etiquette is since you asked them to be in the party and its an extra expense for them.

ive given for every wedding ive been in. you have to figure it as part of the expense, either way! maybe a bit less bc of expense (to close friend/family vs. what i would have given if i wasnt in it), but not less than average (that i would give to any couple).

Lauren1802-I have done the same too. I always give whether I'm in the bridal party or not.
I hear there are always a few non-gifters. If I couldnt afford it, I would not attend the wedding. That's just me.

Were most of her guests from NY? I've heard of weddings out-of-state where guests don't give as much. Either way, that's so rude!!

That is a large number. I did go to a vow renewal which was their wedding since they had done city hall!. I think we were the only ones who gave a card because when we gave it to the bridal party they looked at it like what is this.

50% seems a little high to me..
Also, I've never heard of this '1year rule' until recently. I also give a gift at the night of the wedding & usually make a mad dash to the cardbox as soon as we're allowed in the reception room... what is this after the wedding stuff?

Re: The non-gifters?
Absolutely, positevely a HUGE NO!...and yes NYkers know we give envelopes, cash, moolah, dinero..don't show up with a toaster, or worse empty handed I don't care where you come from: research the ettiquette if unsure.
How could you come to a party empty handed, like how are you going to face me afterwards? makes me upset, my friend got married 1 month ago and she jst told me of ppl who didn't give antything at all, and others who came w/ their whole clan and didn't even fully cover the plate for one of them.. geez..so wrong

which makes me ask, how do you address that? she asked me how to address the ppl who didn't give a gift? do you put them on blast, or let it go?

Re: The non-gifters?
I'm shocked. I had quite a few people who forgot cards, but received TONS in the mail over the course of the few months after the wedding. We even got cards/checks from people who couldn't come AND from people who weren't invited!! Our wedding was 5 months ago and we didn't receive gifts from one couple and one friend. Everyone else gave.

I always give a gift when I'm a BM. Some of my guests didn't give a large sum or $$, and I totally understand! The two people from whom I didn't receive gifts didn't even write out a card!!! So they didn't get a 'thank you.'
