Dental procedure question

Dental procedure question

So yesterday, I went back to the dentist to have my tooth prepared to put on a crown (I had a root canal a few months back) They already put the post on the tooth. Dentist starts out by numbing my mouth with novacaine. He injects the needle into the side of my mouth(back tooth) and all of a sudden I feel a jolt of 'electricity' in my tounge and I jump. The dentist responds by asking me if I felt a sharp pain in my tounge, that that means that the injection was very close to the nerve and that it only happends like 1 in 800 patients (lucky me). Anyway..my tounge still feels a little funky near the injection, like slightly numb.I researched on the internet and read that this means the nerve was damaged and can take weeks or years to repair itself..if it repairs itself at all.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

I had something somewhat similar when I had my wisdom teeth removed. Half of the roof of my mouth stayed numb after the rest of the novacaine wore off. The oral surgeon said that they must have hit the nerve when they injected the novacaine. It took about 6 months to regain the feeling there.

If you're concerned about it, I'd call the dentist and ask.

Feel better!

Thanks...I have to go back to him at the end of the month to have him put on the crown and I am afraid to have him inject anymore. I am pretty sure it was not really his fault, meaning I dont think he was negligent. Unfortunately I am not really familiar with this dentist cause I have only gone to him twice. Just want my tounge to feel normal!!

I've had that... more then once. that last time it happened I couldn't feel my tongue for a few days... well I could feel it, but if felt like a chunk was missing from the side (back).

give it a few more days... if it doesn't get better call the dentist again and ask what you should do.

sorry this happened.

Re: Dental procedure question

does he know if he hit the mandibular nerve? cuz i dont think he would have injected that far down? ask him what nerve he hit. usuallyt he mandibular nerve is the 1 they tell you about b4 any procedure.. but thats usually with extractions. if u can call him and ask what went on..let me know. maybe i can help?

oh, and a piece of advice.. if u cant talk to your doctor... RUN.

oh why were u anesthetised to put a CROWN on. if you already had a rc and a post put in.. i assume u were walking aroudn with a temp crown? something seems weird

quite honestly...I dont know what the hell I had on there, if it was a temp crown. I dont think it was. Dumb of me not to ask, huh? This is what happened. I had root canal like two months ago. Then I went to this dentist and he put the post on (I think) He covered it with what looked like just a white covering (looked like white cement over the whole tooth). I thought yesterday he was putting the crown on, but he said he had to sand (shape) the tooth in order to fit the crown. Before he sanded it he injected me with novacaine. It looked like to me he drilled the middle of the tooth out. Then he took impressions, twice, then filled it with this silver gloppy stuff. Thats what I have in there now.
I dont have a regular dentist cause mine retired, and this dentist was a participant in my insurance. Unfortunatley there arent too many dentists in my area that take my insurance(ghi)
This was my first root canal, so I probably should have asked more questions.
He didnt say what nerve he hit. I go back the 28th

oh yeah....nobody, not even the endodontist that did the root canal...ever warned me that there is a chance that they could damage the nerve when they give you novacaine.

yea, I'd call him and ask what the hell he did and what his intentions were/are.
I've had 4 root canals... (bad teeth- both sets of parents have bad teeth).

I actually had a root canal, had a crown, the crown broke along with the tooth next to it. so the second tooth was 'filed' down- No drugs- to what I call a nub. dr did imprints to have my two new crowns made.. I had a temp that covered both.
I was supposed to have a root canal on said tooth when crowns were done- yup, lost my job.. call the dentist, he says oh i'll take care of you, rather then charging $300 for everything I'll just charge you $1100 (my friend worked for him and I was there like everyday helping with filing, thats why it was so cheap- till he fired her two weeks before I got fired from my job) so I didn't have $1100 when I was 20 years old.. just laid off of my part time job... so I figured I'd have it fixed when I got a new job....
yea, 5 years later and I still haven't had it worked on. I ripped the temp off about 3 years ago and now have two gross looking numbs.

Re: Dental procedure question

ok *** is he doing still using amalgam on his patients?!! seriously go to another dentist. ask for a complete treatplan plan ASAP. see *** he is doing and *** he is billing your ins company for. alllllllllllways ask a million questions. esp with dental.

once a rc is done and apost is put in.. theres nothign else to DRILL into. something is not right at all

the cement ontop of your tooth was the temp crown. and yes, they do need to file down the stub (lol) b4 the put the crown on.. but thats it.. nothign more shoudl be done. u def need to check out your treatment plan from beginning to end.
