Depressed about houses/place to live

Original post by Jen2999

UGHH

I am so depressed as I have been looking and looking for affordable places to live and I am just convinced we do not have enough money to do anything.

I want a house SO BAD, but I dont think that with our salaries we can even think about it right now.

As far as apartments go, we have fred. He needs a yeard and he barks a lot so I really dont know what my options are.

Even condos are so overpriced right now.

Can anyone offer advice. I dont know what to do and my parents have made it clear they do not want us here after the wedding (mostly because th dog is driving them nuts).

HELP

if it is right off the LIE then I would consider it, what is the average price there?

It depends where you buy - there are 'ritzier' areas and less ritzy areas. I'd say ranches are in low/mid 300s to low 400s, colonials and victorians are low 400s up to 600(for ritzier areas).

My friends are house hunting too. They found some great deals in Middle Island, Medford and Coram. The only thing with these areas is you have to be careful cause there are good and bad areas.

(oh and FH and I were originally considering condos/townhouses (some have yards) and there are some in Manorville area for low 300s)

Maybe an apartment in a house that allows doggies?

i also had the obstacle of a pet - admittedly it is not easy - but they are out there.

find a good realtor - that is what we did. we were in the same boat as you - wanted a house but had no idea what we could afford.

he linked us with a GREAT mortgage guy - who sat with us for hours - detrmining % down, monthly payments, estimated upkeep. in the end we decided that a co-op would be best for us right now - but we would have been as lost as you had it not been for the realtor & mortgage guy.

follow that path - it will help you to figure out what is best for you guys to do.

hang in there - luckily, my FH and i got a condo a year ago before the prices skyrocketed.
try not to rent - it really isn't the wisest thing for finances!

My FI and i bought a co-op and it was the BEST move we could have made. First, neither of us was interested in owning a house just yet. Esp w/ these prices. Also, many co-ops allow pets.

Def look into condos, co-ops it's a GREAT starter! You can eventually sell and put that might right towards a house!

Yeah, we are not even thinking about houses right now. We have no choice but to rent an apartment. We're looking for a 2-bedroom so we have a little more space. Plus, FH has our 2 kitties so that's going to be hard also. I'm in Queens and the apartments I've seen in the paper are sooo expensive. Yikes! I feel your pain.

I think we need to develop an LIW commune/complex that provides affordable housing for newlyweds or those about to get married. We could have an activity room set up with TONS of computer terminals so we can sit together AND post stuff at the same time!

We think about our future in a home all the time. Things do work out in the end. Have faith and give yourself time. Things will work out. If that doesnt help, them invite rich people to your wedding and hope they make out BIG checks!!!

to you! My sister just went throught the same thing. Her dog is a beast and she needed to be outside. My sister was able to rent a house but it's in Queens. You may want to consider this. There are some parts of Queens that are nice and not too expensive for apartments/ house rentals. Good luck!

We have 2 choc labs over 100 lbs. Renting is so difficult for us. But we are looking out east also as a last resort to buy something reasonable.

Good Luck!

I feel your pain. The LI housing market is completely out of whack these days. We are not even close to being ready to buy. Thank goodness my FMIL said we could stay there.
