Has anyone ever had a dermatologist tell you that facials are essentially BS?
My derm gave me a glycolic treatment today and after I asked when I could get a facial and he advised that I don't get one AT ALL until my skin is totally cleared up and even then that I should be 'leary' about facials generally.

Nooo, I think you'll be OK. It's not going to ruin your face or anything. It just might not do anything fantastic is all. Only one way to find out!

Re: Dermatologist/Facial Question
I have heard this... but it depends where you get a facial and what you are getitng done. Many places, even cheap nail salons offer facails- those are the ones that are BS. At a medi-spa (short for medical spa) or at a reputable place with asteticians... it absolutely helps to maintain & improve your skin. Depending on what results you are looking for- stick to a derm or a facialist. Or, you can do both b/c they both produce different results!

I am an esthetician...the reason people would breakout after a facial is if the entire plug was not removed during the extraction process...By cleaning the pore entirely u will eliminate the chance of breakouts...as far as the massaging goes...i dont know who said not to do that but massaging is an essential part of the facial because it reduces swelling and inflammation... I dont know why your your derm doesnt like estheticians because most doctors on the island have an esthetician on staff...when i was in school we met several doctors on the island who encourage facials as part of their treatment...U need to find a reputable place to go to...so that u wont have the problem u have been having...
i think alot of these girls who had facials never really even had it extracted, more like pampering type thing. Yeah that was another thing she told me, that when i pop my own pimples i dont take out the whole thing so it will continue to come back.
I used to go to someone else who extracted all my pimples and white heads and she also massaged me and honestly when i would go get this done i wouldnt go out the same day bc my face was so red and swollen and you can really see the marks alot. I was afraid of having it done on a tuesday and what i would look like the next day bc from my past experiences it was so obvious lol. Honestly this time i didnt have any swelling and the next day after my facial i went to work with no make up on so i can let my skin breathe...if i would have marks or any swelling or redness i wouldnt have gone to work with no make up
Espo where do you go?
ITS ON madison avenue between 83rd and 84th street at the kimara ahnert salon, and the lady i used is lidia

Re: Dermatologist/Facial Question
I've gotten facials every months for a few years now and my skin looks much better than it did. it all depends on who you go to. most derms do beauty treatments so i think they say it so it won't cut into their business. i did the glycolic and it didn't do anything for me.
i would say go with your gut. you'l probably feel if a person is doing a good job. i don't do facials that are just creams. they should do extractions. a good facial might need about 5-6 months of monthly treatments to start looking like a big difference. i notice that i don't break out anymore. i get maybe one or two big pimples around that time of the month.
FH gets facials too. i actually use his lady LOL!!! he's the one that got me doing it. we go the third saturday of every month
