Despite FH's heroics...

Original post by halfbaked

...my sister's dog had to be put to sleep last night. Apparently, because she was so old, her brain was shutting down and she was choking because her brain wasn't telling her throat to swallow. My sister is devastated- she's had that dog for 8 years and she loved her so much. And she's young- 17- so this is the first time she's really had to deal with death. Most of my grandparents/great aunts and uncles died when she was very young and my childhood dog died when she was very young. I feel even worse that her and my mom had to make the decision to put her to sleep. But ultimately, they knew it was the right thing, they didn't want her to suffer anymore. Between all the wedding drama, PMS, arguing with FH, and now poor Emma being put to sleep, I don't think I've ever cried so much in a week! Please keep my sister in your prayers.
Thanks ladies.

She definitely had a very long, full life. She was older than my sister! She might have even been 19 or 20 but her previous owner didn't know exactly.

Thanks again ladies! I'm going to bawl again when I see my sister tonight, I just know it.

I am SO sorry to hear that...FMIL had to put her pom to sleep two years ago and it was emotional for everyone.

Like you said, she lived a long and happy life, you and your family obviously took very good care of her and this was the humane decision.

Seriously! I don't live with my parents anymore, but I'm over there so often it's like she was mine... maybe my furniece. If it was one of MY dogs, a week before my wedding?! I'd be a disaster! I can't even imagine!

I had to put my dog down when I was 19. It was my first close experience with death too so I can relate. She will be okay in time and will eventually just smile when she thinks of the dog. And a new pet, while never a replacement, does fill the void a bit and makes room for additional love.

I totally agree. We had to put down my childhood dog when I was 16. It happened while I was on vacation but I came home early- my parents were putting her on the leash to take her to the vet. I was heartbroken, but at least I got to say goodbye. I still cry when I think about her, but I know it was the right thing to do. And I already told my sister that after the wedding I will go with her and adopt an adorable little fluffy puppy for her to love, but it'll never be Emma.
