I am attending a destination wedding very soon and I am going alone b/c FH couldnt get off of work. Its so sad to say and Im sure many can relate I am so broke right now. After hotel...airfare and $450 BM gown (in the bridal party) Im not sure what is appropriate to give for a gift. I was going to give $300 but now that I am going alone and its destination what do you think???

Re: Destination Wedding Gift???
Fh's cousin is getting married this summer in Jamaica. Were not going cause it's 3 weeks after our wedding and will be just getting home and everything. But were still probably gonna send them something probably $200 or so. If you were gonna give $300 with your FH I would give $150 then. I know they will know not to expect alot cause of all the expenses and all of a destination wedding.

I would have loved to have a destination wedding..I would have felt the same way about gifts. But this particular person does not have that outlook on things and I know it. I dont want her to be insulted.

You spending all that money is a gift in itself. And they would have to understand that you also have to pay for your own wedding.

So they are expecting gifts from people even tho they are going to the wedding?

imo $150 is a nice gift considering all the other things that you had to pay for.

That is unreasonable.
I read somewhere that if the bride and groom are footing a big chunk of the personal expenses for a destination wedding, then you would give a normal gift. If they expect everyone to pay for everything, I would probably give an actual gift and have it sent to their house, or give a smaller monetary gift.
FH's brother is having a destination wedding too, and we tried telling his fiance this, but she is under the impression that she will receive the same gifts as us at our wedding. . . we'll see.
But you def aren't expected to give the same kind of gift you would in NY. I think $150 is a nice gift.

i agree $150 is a great gift. you've already spent a fortune. Either way, she should be thankful for what she gets.

Re: Destination Wedding Gift???
Honestly I think most people will feel like I do...I said yes and I should deal with the expense of it. I dont think its fair that Im spending a ton to go to hers but I guess it bothers me that she will give the same in return

Re: Destination Wedding Gift???
went to a destination wedding with FH and even though the trip cost us over $2500 we still gave the bride and groom a gift of $300. we're not rich, but thats what we gave them since they hosted everyone for the fours days.

But would you have given less if you were going alone and not with FH?

Re: Destination Wedding Gift???
I have read to that if the bride and groom are not hosting any part of your trip then a gift is should not be expected . My friend is thinking about planning a destination wedding..She is under full assumption that there will be no gifts. Since they cannot afford to help with the hotel they will throw a dinner before the wedding and then the gift to them is coming to the wedding...
If you want to give 100 or 150 i think that is more than generous...

Re: Destination Wedding Gift???
our wedding might be considered a 'destination wedding' for some because a lot of our friends are scattered across the country, and FH's entire family is OOT. I hope people still give us gifts
however, i'll understand if they don't give as much..

Its different. You're not asking people to go away so you can get married on a beach, people are coming to where you live to see you get married.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that heard that about not giving a gift if you already paid all the expenses to travel and attend the wedding. . .
Is this couple paying for your hotel or dinners while you are there?

Re: Destination Wedding Gift???
i still can't get over the $450 for a BM dress!!!!! never mind a gift! you should give them a bill!!!
give what you can and don't give above your means. you're contributing enough already.
