Destination Wedding vs. Long Island-HELP!!

Destination Wedding vs. Long Island-HELP!!

So FH & I have been going back & forth for months on what to do. As much as we would love the big typical LI wedding.. our concern is the cost. Do we really want to spend that much for one day? Or do a small wedding in the Caribbean and put the money toward a house? UGH. Help!

Thoughts, opinions, any research you have done on your own etc.

I have not looked at a destination wedding but from people I talked to destination weddings tend to run the same as reg weddings due to added cost of airfare and hotel stay.

it ends up costing alot for everyone to come to the Caribbean for your wedding, so many do not make the trip. Those who do come usually do not give wedding gifts, as their airfare and hotel stay is gift enough... If you have a LI wedding, you will make back some of the wedding money you spent in gifts, so it will probably end up evening out anyway

We were strongly considering a destination wedding, in fact it had been our plan since before we were engaged. Once fh proposed and I got down to the nitty gritty of planning I started reconsidering. I was having trouble picturing the big day since we were planning it from so far away, but that's a personal thing, you might not feel that way. Cost-wise there isn't too much of a difference as long as you're doing the LI wedding on a budget. It can be really inexpensive to do a destination wedding if its just the two of you though!

I guess with the amount of people on our guest list there is no way to have an inexpensive LI wedding. We either need to cut the list A LOT & have it on LI or maybe just keep it super small in the Caribbean.

So far I have not met anyone who has broke even. Most people cover their plate but if you add up flowers photograper etc it all adds up.

I just want someone to make the decision for me!

Thanks soo much for all your input!

You can do a somewhat of a destination wedding on Long Island. I know that Montauk, Shelter Island or Fire Island has some really nice small venues. This will give you a destination feel without leaving Long Island!

Thats a cute idea. Fire Island makes me nervous, my luck there would be a hurricane in June! lol

The thing that can be hard with destination weddings is they aren't legal. You would still have to get married here in a courthouse or something. We were considering a destination but we didn't want to drag our families down to the Caribbean when the ceremony wasn't going to be the real thing anyway.

I think the best way to make that decision is base it on the people you couldn't imagine getting married without, would they make the trip? If you think they will then I would weigh the pros and cons of both along with the cost and that should surely make the decision easier. Good luck!

I was all about having a destination wedding. My mom was going to pay for everything. But my FSIL sad she's not leaving the country. My FH is the only child out of four that will be married. We wanted all our parent and siblings there. I was so pissed. I always wanted a beach wedding. But my inlaws are helping to pay now so it's not such a burden on my mother.

this was a tough one for me too. i wanted a destination wedding but it was going to cost our guests a lot of money and we didn't want to force people to spend the money. i wound up picking cresthollow because it has palm trees and sand and that tropical feel, but it wound up raining and being cold memorial day weekend so we had to have it inside anyways. it was still nice to have all our family and friends with us.

I just got an email from Montauk Yacht Club offering discounted rates for March and April next year. They're also offering a complimentary bon fire on the beach after the reception. Not sure the price per person, but if you want a mini DW, you might want to consider this.

I always tossed around the idea of a destination wedding but I always felt that it was a lot to ask of my friends and family to spend that kind of money on airfare and the hotel to stay at. I also didn't want my family on my honeymoon with me and FH lol. I know if I turned around and said lets have a destination wedding I couldn't- grandma isn't doing well and regardless of when we had it- she wouldn't be able to travel.

At the end of the day it all depends on what you want to do and if the people you really want there will travel and spend the time and money to be with you!

I dig the destination/elopement idea.. whoever comes comes and you have so much money saved to start a future instead!

We originally wanted a destination wedding but when all was said and done we decided against it. I know some of my family would not have been able to afford the airfare and hotel costs and I felt it was more important that I share my special day with the people I love so we decided to have our wedding here on LI. I think it's totally up to you. If you want to keep it simple & know your close family & friends will travel, then go that route.

Thanks Jenanddivan! I will def check it out! We are still undecided lol. I think we are going to look at some more places on LI & today I am going to a travel agent just to get more info. Part of me wants a big wedding but the other part of me wants to save the money and start a family sooner. Unless of course we manage to drop 100 people off our current guest list lol
