I went home last night and in my driveway was a brand new Jeep Liberty. DH bought it for me for Christmas. I had no idea! I was SOOOOOOO excited. I love it!
DH's parents charged him rent all throughout the years that he lived home ($500 a month since he was 18 years old <-- he is 29 now). When we got married they surprised him and gave him back all that money. So they really did not keep his rent, they just saved it for him until he got married. So when they gave that to DH he asked me where I wanted to go away and I told him 'that is your money, not mine. I want you to spend it on something that will make you happy.' So when I came home from work last night I saw this car in the driveway and I thought he bought it for himself, but then he told me it was my new car and that buying this for me is what makes him happy.
I am so happy!

Wow... what an amazing story!!! What I like the most is what his parents did for him - that is such a great way of 'forcing' (in a good way) him to save money! Congrats!

I totally agree - this is definitely something that we will do for our children. I don't know exactly how much I will take from them every month for 'rent', but that was just so amazing to get a check for amount right after the wedding. It was SO great and definitely came at a perfect time (our taxes for our house are due next month). I think that was very smart of his parents and I thank them for teaching DH to work and save. He is such a hard worker and saves so much of his money, and now I know it is because of what they taught him.
