Yeah, they are legit for the most part. But you definitely need to be educated, Zales and Kay are run corporately so you can trust what you're buying. DD are independent shops so if you are looking for a certain quality stone you need to be educated. But I think for wedding bands you shouldnt have a problem, typically people don't go for higher quality stones in a band anyway.

We got our stone from the DD, BUT we live very close and we could check out many places and we did LOTS of homework. We ended up getting our stone a place that doesnt usually sell to the public, which I found only after doing lots of research.
But for bands, I think you can definitely find a good deal and you'll not beat the selection after you go to a few of the bigger shops. Keep in mind most of them are closed on Saturday.

You can certainly go to the DD, but the deal is that you have to bargain, and pay cash. Be willing to walk if they won't meet your price, as there are PLENTY of stores who will meet it. Get a thick skin as negotiating can be a little tough and they will act 'insulted' with your offer - funny because they are willing to take it! You can get it for cheaper than any chain, for sure. Good luck.

diamond district

I went to the Diamond District last year looking for my engagement ring. I didn't really like the experience and I really wouldn't buy from there unless i had a recommendation from someone. With that said, I ended up having my ring made by Carl at Sampieri Diamonds. He custom made my ring to be exactly how I envisioned. He showed me numerous diamonds and made sure we got the best bang for FH's buck. He's located on the Bowery right off of Canal Street in Chinatown. There are a bunch of jewelry vendors there, but you don't feel so pressured like you do uptown in the DD.

Re: diamond district

I went to Blauweiss and Berkowitz in the diamond district. I worked with Barry (owner) but mostly with his daughter Jess, and made a custom ring for my FW. She wanted a Ruby for the main stone. I was referred to them by another friend who had used them. They guarantee whatever you get will appraise for more than what you pay or you can return it. My fionce's ring came out great and we're going back there for our wedding bands. They're located at 578 5th ave at 47th St.
