Diamond experts - help?

Anyone know the pricing for square brillant cut stones?

We have been looking at diamonds since early August and have 2 appointments to look at stones (Sat. & Mon). I have finally decided to look at square cuts and found a few square brillants - Jubilee, Regent & Oueen of Hearts - all hearts and arrows square cuts.

Anyone have one of these squares stones or a non branded square brillant stone? If so, which one?

Also, I want a 2 carat square brillant G VS2 (or at least a 2 carat spread). How much should that cost?

Thanks much.

Re: Diamond experts - help?

check www.bluenile.com.

You cna out in the exact specifications that you want and it'll show you real gems and real prices!

I really don't know how much that would cost because I don't know much about that cut, I looked at completely different stones than you're describing, so I don't know, but try bluenile.

Re: Diamond experts - help?

Hi Katrina,

If you are looking for diamond of that quality you are talking at least $12, 000-$20,000 depending on the cut. If you are willing to take an H color (which you cannot distinguish from G) and are willing to come down on clarity (maybe VVs-SI) you can get something for under that price.

More than anything else, the cut matters most, that is what determines the brilliance of your ring, so if you don't have perfect clarity and color, but you have a beautiful cut, your ring will be more brilliant than an F, IF with a poor cut.

You can definitely get 1.5 carats (which is huge) for under $10, 000. FH and I saw some at Fortunoff at the Source Mall in Garden City. I would also recommend trying the Diamond District (Jewelers on Fifth). I can recommend someone specific if you are interested.

But if you find someone offering you a ring below that range definitely get it independently appraised. Most important of all if you can buy your stone loose and then put it in a setting that is the best thing you can do in terms of making sure you are getting exactly what you want.

Hope this helps!

Re: Diamond experts - help?

i got my princess cut ring at the diamond district and they were great. my ring is about 1.8ct but because it was cut and set beautifully, it has at least a 2.0ct spread.

this is what my jeweler told me about my princess cut ring, when we gave him specs as to the quality of the stone we wanted to get, for a princess cut, i shouldn't worry too much about the clarity since the cut itself has many facets that a slight imperfection will be very hard to notice (clarity is most important to an emerald cut since it has the least facets of the different cuts available, therefore, the slightest imperfection may be noticeable to the naked eye). for a princess cut, it is best to have a great cut because this will set off the brilliance that you want.

ps, for my ring, i actually got it independently appraised and of course it was appraised a lot more that what fh paid for and actually based on my cut and setting, the appraiser actually appraised it at a higher ct than what my jeweler told me it really is. i also went to blue nile's site, put in my specs and the ring prices where a lot higher than mine. so i did my due diligence and am even happier with fh's choice of ring. :)

Re: Diamond experts - help?

Thanks so much ladies. We are looking at stones again tomorrow and Monday.

From what FI told me, he is planning to spend a pretty decent chuck of money. When he went looking at stones alone, I know he was looking at at least 1.5 carats, G & VS. Not sure if they are Hearts and Arrows stones though. FI thought it was too small in comparison to the 1.72 round he wanted to buy.

I know he had a deposit on the GIA certified 1.72 G VS2 ideal round until I had him get the money back since the jeweler became a jerk. I saw that stone myself when the jeweler brought it to my office with others so FI and I could look at it. I do not know the exact price or how much he plans to spend but I figure the 1.72 he looked at is comparable to a 2 ct Jubillee? Facny shapes are supposedly cheaper than rounds and the Jubillee is a square brillant.

I did think the 1.72 was a bit larger than some rings I have seen but I work in an office where many women have what I think are HUGE rings - I mean like that lollipop ring they sell for kids. LOL LOL One woman, a partner at my law firm, has at least a 5 carat ring. It's not that sparkly though and it took me a few weeks to even notice it. In fact, she walked up to me at the copier to tell me she was engaged (since I had not said anything I guess). We sat on the same floor ( a few doors away) so I guess she thought I noticed her ring?

The funny thing was she commented about a bracelet I have about two months ago at a meeting. We were seated next to each other and she reach out and grabbed at my wrist. LOL The diamonds are not even that great - decent cut J, K, & L stones and some other 'champagne' stones that are lower in color. But it does sparkle pretty well when it's clean. I bought it myself in 2002 before I knew anything about diamonds. I just thought it was pretty. Who knew there was all this research invovled.
