besides me drop hints as to what they would like as an engagement ring? OR, did you go and look together?
I dropped hints and am NOT living it down that it wasn't a total surprise.

Re: Did Anyone....
We did a little shopping, then I gave him the Tiffany catalog with a picture of a six prong solitaire and said that this is what I want, but take it to a differtent jeweler to save some money. He brought it to a family jeweler who made the ring for him and it is exactly what I wanted!

Re: Did Anyone....
I gave him an idea of what I wanted. He knew round stone and platinum was a must! But the actual ring is something he came up with and he did a GREAT job!

Re: Did Anyone....
he was given some hints - he knew I wanted platinum and a solitaire, either round or emerald cut. He designed the setting himself to something he thought I'd like (though he was totally nervous about giving it to me!) He did very well - I love the setting, its not like any I've seen before and yet its simple and elegant. Perfect.

Re: Did Anyone....
Did you read my last post?? LOL. I did all the leg work...j/k ladies. I went and I designed a ring on a diamond is forever.com and I emailed the hint to him. He said he was afraid to go and get it w/o me. The funny thing is when I picked the stone, he was like that's what you want I think in his eyes he thought I would have chosen something larger...who knows
I think if I had left it up to him I would have gotten a huge piece of yellow glass, who knows why leave it to chance. He admitted to me he knows nothing about diamonds so its was best if I do it all. He showed up and paid, but he proposed with it a second time, b/c the first time he proposed was w/o a ring.

Re: Did Anyone....
I gave my fi a file on diamonds and settings. It had settings that I liked, examples of settings that I thought were disgusting (as a warning of what to stay away from) and acceptable spec ranges for the kind of diamond I wanted. I knew I wanted a well-cut, colorless oval with VS2 clarity or better in the biggest carat size I could get without jeopardizing the quality! Fi really appreciated the info, it made life easier on him. He always said, 'you know it is coming eventually, I would rather you tell me exactly what you want because you will have it on your finger forever and you have to look at it everyday.' I am glad I participated in selecting my diamond because it is amazing, it honestly is my dream ring. I will enjoy looking at it on my hand for the rest of my life. I know some people who were totally in the dark about getting engaged and secretly hate their ring! By the way, I was still surprised when he finally popped the question!

Re: Did Anyone....
We also picked out the ring together, well, I actually went looking without him, he was away, and then found one I loved and showed him, we kept looking and then we found together, the one he bought and I love it!

I had no clue! He picked it out and totally surprised me. He picked an Oval (the last shape I had in mind) Now I love it! It's very sentimental to me.

I was also very surprised and had no idea he would pop the question. We had had casual conversations previously as to what type of stone I would like, so he had a choice of 3 to choose from. He chose a pear shape center stone and the setting is just a classic platinum with one baguette on each side. Very simple and elegant - exactly what I wanted.

Re: Did Anyone....
I used to show him pictures of what I wanted when I saw them in catalogs. I always wanted a round center stone with baguettes on the side. However, when he proposed, he did so with his grandmother's ring, and I was floored. It's a gorgeous round solitaire and, although not what I had initially invisioned if I had to pick it out, it's gorgeous and I love it.

Re: Did Anyone....
same exact story as clpunch!!::He'd asked me to pick out rings on adiamondisforever.com that I liked, or tell him what about them I liked. Then he had one made that incorporated elements of different rings that I liked. But what it actually looked like was a total surprise.

Re: Did Anyone....
I gave a basic description of what I would like, but he did an AMAZING job. So much nicer than I described.

Re: Did Anyone....
Thanks ladies! Shamma- you crack me up! I dropped hints- and maybe a few more as to the size that I wanted He seems to still be mad over this- thinking that no one gives hints and it shouldn't be that way. I love my ring, it's better than anything I could ever imagine or talk about b/c it's from HIM. I wanted to make sure I wasn't the only girl who hinted here and there.
Maybe it wasn't so necessary of me to say.... princess cut- you know what princess cut is.... it's the square one

Re: Did Anyone....
FH picked it all out on his own.. I mean, when we've been out we'd look for the goof, but this was something he always wanted to do on his own.. and a great job he did indeed! lol

Re: Did Anyone....
All I told him was that I wanted a Marquise cut and he did the rest. He picked out the most beautiful setting.
