Did anyone address their Envelopes this way?

Original post by Jordan

Mr and Mrs John & Sally Smith ???

I seem to have an aversion to leaving out the woman's name...and wanted to see if anyone else did this. How did it go over? FH is concerned that I'm going to offend someone.

Also...how did you address single women in their 30's? Did you put Miss or Ms?

When I get married - I may change my last name but i am not changing my first name.

Mrs John Smith is outdated and is insulting (in my opinion)

old ladies like it - my friends and I despise it.
I will not be know just by an 's'

Please do address the enveloped the way you posted. You may have some older people who don't mind but a lot of younger women want to keep their first names. My Fi finds it annoying that someone would want to call me by his first name. He said it's his name - not mine!!!! I totally agree.

This was a tradition back when women were considered posessions of the man. They were just given the 's' to show posession of the male. So outdated now.

Some will tell you it isn't the traditonal way to address an envelope. Well you can stick with tradition and offend people or do it your way which respects those who want to maintain their own identity despite being married and changing their last name

By the way - using a woman's first name does not make it less formal - it just makes it more modern.

I definteliy don't think there's anything wrong with writing 'Mr. and Mrs. John and Mary Smith.' I also have a pet peeve about being thought of 'Mrs. Grooms name.' I prefer using Ms. to Miss when addressing to single women.

I am another person who despises being Mr and Mrs Male first name Male last name. I like my name included...I feel like property otherwise...and I am way too independent for that. I am glad to see there are others out there.

However, when I addressed my invites I went with the traditional way on the outer envelope. I did them on my PC and with the font I used it looked nicest and was the simplest to do - I took the easy way out. But for formal invites like wedding invites it doesn't bother me as much as normal cards and letters and invites. I cringe when family addresses me that way - big pet peeve of mine. (PS On the inner envelopes I just put both parties first names - kept it a little informal so as not to use my pet peeve twice.)

As for single woman - I feel Miss sounds immature whether proper etiquette or not and I always used Ms. on my invites unless the female was under 18.

Very few women get offended by Mr and Mrs John Smith. That was mostly back in the height of the women's lib movement.
