The Name Game: What Are Your Choices
It use to be standard practice/protocol for the bride to take on the last (and sometimes even the first) name of her groom. So, when Jane Doe married John Smith she became either Mrs. John Smith or Mrs. Jane Smith.
Well, the options and the expectations have changed...and more and more ladies are opting to keep their own identities.
So, when it comes to getting married and change of name considerations here are just a few.
1. Taking on your man's name: Now strictly a personal preference rather than a 'mandatory expectation'. So, it's best to think about how much you'll like your new name, how much you embrace it and its implications on work, family, relationships, children, finances, etc.
2. Modern Options: Some of your options include keeping your own surname, hyphenating, or combining the two for a truly unique new name that is unique to the two of you.
3. Don't keep the decision a surprise or a secret: It's best to discuss your intentions well before the wedding with not only the groom (for his feedback) but with your parents and his. Be especially sensitive to the groom's parents if you opt not to take on their last name, especially if they're the traditional type.
4. Know the legalities: Remember that every jurisdiction has its own rules, so it's best to check with you town or city hall to find out about theirs and what they are. Pay a visit to the local marriage bureau or filing out the papers online between 30 and 90 days before the wedding.
5. When can you use your new name? Legally you can use your new name as soon as you sign your marriage license. However, keep in mind that you won't get you license on your wedding day, but instead it will be mailed to you within a few weeks, after processing by the local marriage bureau.
6. Book you honeymoon in your maiden name: Remember that airlines that the name on your photo ID and/or passport matches the name on your ticket (and that includes newlyweds), and you generally can't change your IDs until after the wedding.
7. Informing the authorities: Once you receive your marriage certificate contact every institution that has your name on file and let them know of the name change. These agencies include the Social Security Office, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the IRS, and your employer.
8. Want to do the paperwork yourself?Download the forms at formsguru.com, or order a kit for $20 from NameThatBride.com. Make the process easier by hiring a firm, such as MissNowMrs.com, to do the work for you.
