Did anyone get a 1099-G????

I just got a 1099-G from NYS Tax and Finance.

I'm trying to google it but so far all I'm getting is that its an overpayment. And its from 2007 for $750.00 I hope they own me $750 not that I owe them!

Go to the irs website and look up the form. Did you sell anything? When you file your income tax I believe it will ask if you receive a 1099 G I would give to your accountant they will enter the information it needs to be reported on your return.

Found this on Yahoo answers...from the looks of it it looks like you have to claim it as part of your income for 2008 since you didn't pay tax on it in the year earned...

'If you do a search for 1099-G on Yahoo Answers you can find the answer to this question. Any 1099 form is a statement of income on which tax is due. 1099-G's are statements of income paid out by state government in the previous year that are now taxable.

Last year, you itemized your federal deductions and claimed a return for $136. This is money that you prepaid to NY over the year to pay your 2005 taxes, but then did not owe the state. However, since you hadn't received this money during the year, the federal government never taxed you on it, so you now may have to report it as income in the year you received it, 2006. Though it seems like you are being taxed on the same money twice, you actually have not yet paid taxes on this money.

Whether or not you will actually have to pay tax on it depends on a lot of other factors, including if you paid AMT last year, if and how much your federal itemized deduction was in 2005, how much state tax you paid in 2005,etc. This all goes into Line 10 of the 1040, and the instructions for line 10 should help you determine if you need to report it or not (or, let Turbo Tax or something similar figure it out for you)'

Re: Did anyone get a 1099-G????

I'm a CPA....a 1099-G from NYS just states your tax refund you got from your 2007 tax return; it should match your refund on page 4 of your 2007 tax return, adjusted for any credits or anything like that.

You don't owe them money...so no worries there!

And you would only pick it up on your 2008 tax return as income, if you took state taxes paid as an itemized deduction on your 2007 tax return.

Hope that helps!
