I didn't see it, but I think she was talking about post pardom depression. She wrote a book about it & I read an exerpt from it in GOod Housekeeping.

On a side note, when we wnet out to dinner for my birthday a few weeks ago, the woman at the next table was talking about how seh went to a taping of Oprah & it was with Brooke Sheilds talking about post-pardum depression.

I saw it, it was actually very eye opening, and I applaud Brooke for being brave enough to tell her story and exactly how she was feeling.
It was in reference to post partum depression, but it was more than just the 'baby blues'.
She actually considered taking her own life. Thankfully, she never had any thoughts of hurting the baby.

ETA: she actually breastfed too - but was totally disassociated from the whole experience.

She is very brave for talking so openly about her experiences....Im sure that she caught alot of slack for it

I saw it and was disgusted by her. I, in no way, understood where she was coming from at all. I think she came off as a total freak, and I don't understand why she would share such strange and disturbing thoughts with all of America.

Seriously - I know a lot of women go through post-partum depression, but she said she had absolutely no connection with her baby whatsoever....the whole thing was just weird.

I think that it was brave of her to come forward and share - there are many women out there that have problems with post partum depression (some worse than others) and maybe they will see that they can get help!

wow, that must be a very scary thing to be going through and thank God I didn't have to go through such a thing after having my daughter.

Exactly, there are alot of women out there who suffer like this, she is in no way a freak. Yes they were disturbing thoughts but that was the whole point - something was wrong with her! Now that she has gotten the help she needed she is loving mother.

I totally disagree. This could be you some day...or me...or anyone.

I cannot ever imagine not wanting to nurture my child - a living being created out of love.

I think it's scary that she thinks she is ready to have another child.

I doubt she wanted to have these feelings or lack there of for her child. These feeling aren't expected. I didn't see the show but I would think she had professional help and is now ready to have another child. Maybe this pregnancy will be different.

It's comments like that that make women ashamed of the feelings they may be having and then in turn not get help. What she talked about was VERY serious and very real for some women. There are different extremes to postpartum, thankfully she was able get help before it got worse.

As someone who's due in 3 weeks, its something that I often think about. Of course you image that once you see your baby you will fall in love, but that doesn't happen for everyone. I pray that I don't get post partum. But the reality is that it can happen and knowing about it the first step in recognizing something is wrong.

I have to disagree with you 100% -and until you are a mother , I'm sure there is NO way to understand where she is coming from and what she went through not only to have her child, but to openly talk about her depression following the birth of her daughter!!

I didn't see the show, but I did read quite a few excerpts from her book - I found it very interesting and I actually think the fact she is talking about postpartum depresion and all that she went through is VERY brave of her, and I think she is performing an invaluable service to so many ladies out there in her shoes, who think they are crazy and do not realize there is help out there ...

Would it be better to NOT talk about this subject then? Its REALITY, unfortunately - if Brooke Shield even helped ONE LADY get help before they perhaps did something to themselve or (god forbid) harmed their child, then I applaud her!

I think to judge her for being honest is a shame. Hers was a happy ending and gives so many people hope! The fact she also seeking help and being treated for it, is wonderful

You are being highly judgmental

I'm sure she didn't imagine it either, I mean she tried so hard to have the baby, she went through so much.

Re: Did anyone see yesterdays Oprah with Brooke Sheild's

I suffered from depression after my son was born...I love every moment I get to share with my son....but I would cry all the time....a commercial could set me off.

My point is...you have no idea what will happen until it does....no one plans on being depressed....you body is over loaded with harmones...and sometimes the brain reacts differently to these harmones

Re: Did anyone see yesterdays Oprah with Brooke Sheild's

I understand that nobody WANTS to have these feelings. It CAN happen to anyone, but what we are talking about is BROOKE SHIELDS, not everyone.

I think BROOKE came off as a lot more extreme than most women that go through post partum depression. Did you girls see the show, or are you referring to post partum depression in general?
