I mean - she implied that she not only wanted to kill herself, but her baby as well - sorry, but I can't associate in any way with that.

I understand that nobody WANTS to have these feelings. It CAN happen to anyone, but what we are talking about is BROOKE SHIELDS, not everyone.

I think BROOKE came off as a lot more extreme than most women that go through post partum depression. Did you girls see the show, or are you referring to post partum depression in general?

I did see the show. Her story probably isn't the most extreme case. I've heard about women who hurt or even kill their children.

I saw the show...and as new mom...who spent alot of time with other mothers in the NICU...I saw alot of depression....in all forms.
Ill admit...Im not realy a Brooke Sheilds fan....but post partum doesn't seek out certain people...it doesn' care that you are famous. I think her talking about her depression openly can help other woman seek help...woman who may have serious depression that can extend as far as harming their child.

I don't think the point was to associate with her -- I know I CANNOT RELATE per se, I have never given birth to a child

The fact is that this is a very REAL problem and I'm sure that it was not easy for her to sit on that stage or write her book .. and for her to actually share all those intimate, horrible feelings and thoughts she had with the world!

The point is that this is more common than any of us would care to admit, and it does not mean she was a horrible person - it is a DISEASE that can be treated with anti-depressants, etc. She is trying to get out the facts that NO WOMAN should be ashamed or feel like they are crazy for going thorugh this, because there is help out there -

I hope to never go through what she went through. HOWEVER knowing she did go through and it is now recovering and doing well, of course that would only help me in case I EVER experienced those feelings once I am lucky enough to have a child

There is no shame in suffering from depression - but luckily we live in a society where there IS HELP out there

I give her a lot of credit, since she had to know that at least one ignorant person found her a freak. Many of us have probably dealt with enough PMS to know what hormones can do to us. I myself have been floored by some of the thoughts and reactions I have had to things during that not-so-fun stage!

I think it's important for women who are TTC to know all the possibilities and to know that feeling depressed is normal. Motherhood and pregnancy and childbirth is too often depicted as something that is smooth sailing. And it's usually not.

I also find it amazing (in a postive way) that Brooke wants another baby, considering what the childbirth experience was like. That was really the worst birth story I ever heard. It had to be excrutiating, physically and mentally.

Tracy - so well said!

I didn't hear or read her birth story, but I did hear it was harrowing.

Again, I reiterate that I actually respect Brooke and commend her for being so open about a subject that is so often considered something we should NOT talk about

Re: Did anyone see yesterdays Oprah with Brooke Sheild's

Women across America who suffer from PPD can probably associate with Brooke Shields, and it probably does help them to know that it is a common disorder, but it still doesn't change my feelings while I watched the show.

I usually can see where most people come from, and I am usually open to understanding different disorders. But, I just couldn't get where she was coming from. I just thought what she said was really bizarre.

Sorry, but I have a right to my opinion like all of you do. No need to get angry.

I'm not angry. I think it's a good discussion.

i think there are a lot of disorders out there that commonly 'do not make any sense' to BILLIONS of people...

THIS imo..isn't one of them!

Well why not just recognize that you can't relate bc you have never had children or been in her situation. Calling her a freak was totally ignorant for something that is a serious medical problem.

NO! She never said implied wanting to kill her baby, not once.

Well, perhaps that was unnecessary of me to say - I apologize. That was just my initial feeling.

Sometimes it's easy to judge when we haven't been in that person's shoes. Honestly it's something I would ever want to experience!

Have you given birth to a baby?

I, myself have not, but do know people who suffered horribly through post partum depression. This is not something that you make a choice to have; it is a result of many chemical changes in your body. Do you think women with this honestly are making an effort NOT to get better? Post partum is a physiological disorder and I applaud anyone that is willing to share some very imitate details in an effort to help others. I'm sure those feelings were very difficult to share and to deal with. I truly hope you do not have to experience such a disorder.

I'm glad she shared it too. Maybe she was able to help even one person who was watching to know they are not alone in feeling this way.
