Five people mowed down in a hit and run?Police: 21-year-old Joseph Cassidy deliberately hit the victims then left the scene

(East Meadow - WABC, May 18, 2006) - Police have a suspect in custody for a bizarre hit and run on Long Island. Five people are being treated at Nassau University Medical Center after an enraged driver ran them over in North Bellmore.
Eyewitness News reporter Ken Rosato is live in East Meadow outside of Nassau University Medical Center.
All of the victims were taken to this hospital with not life-threatening injuries.
The bizarre drama unfolded just before 9:00 p.m. on Pacific Street. Police still aren't sure what sparked a Long Island man to plow his car into five people, but neighbors told us it involved an argument over a wedding and a ring.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash, and five bodies laid out across the road.
'I looked over and just saw four or five people laying down...how could one car run over four or five people?' a neighbor said.
Police say 21-year-old Joseph Cassidy was behind the wheel. That, after arriving at the home, a series of fights broke out, he threw his SUV into reverse, and hit five people.
While fleeing the scene, he struck a woman a second time, breaking her leg.
Cassidy was arrested a short time later in garden city and is now in custody.
Four of the victims are from one family, the other is a neighbor who tried to intervene.
'Some other neighbors had come out as well and tried to break the fight up and that's when the operator of that vehicle left the scene, striking the five individuals,' a Nassau Police official said.
Cassidy was charged with second-degree assault. He will be arraigned later today at first district court.
****the crazy thing is that one of the victims that was hit is supposed to be GETTING MARRIED TOMORROW!!
