what did you say? I'd like to thank my parents for all that they did, thank the guest for coming, etc., but some people are saying that it's not appropriate. Thoughts?

It's appropriate if that's what you want to do. I know that I'm too emotional to make a speech on my wedding day, but I will be making one at the RD, which I'm sure I will cry through the whole thing. LOL!

Edited, b/c -oops- i was thinking you meant at the shower. I have heard that it is appropriate , but not neccessary to speak at your own wedding, usually beofre the cake- I have seen several couples do that. Just keep it brief.
And don't toast to yourself- that may be what people are thinking of when they say it is inappropriate.

Thats what we did! Why wouldn't it be appropriate?
We kept it short and sweet ! We thanked our parents for all their help and support and thanked everyone for coming (we had lots of people that traveled overseas to be at our wedding - and that meant alot to us)!
We even said a few words in italian - because many didn't speak English, it was perfect

I think we will say something at the RD...
otherwise a speech at the wedding will turn on the waterworks for me...

We went around and personally thanked everyone for coming. On our video we said our 'speech' thank you's to our parents!

I was also thinking about making a short speech...thanking everyone for coming but I will also cry through the whole thing! I like the idea of walking around to everyone and thanking each one personally.

i doubt we will but if we do it will be in additikon to peronally thanking everyone individually
i think it is a bit rude whne the bride and groom don't come around this happened at one wedding i went to and everyone was talking about it

I can't possibly imagine that it's ever inappropriate to thank your guests and those who helped to make your wedding all that you dreamt it would be, unless you simply skip going around and saying hi to all of your guests.
I am having a very small wedding, so I think we (most likely me, because FH is not very good at stuff like that) will make a toast to our guests for being there for us separately and together as the most important people in our lives.

I made a speech at our wedding. It was not in place of going around thanking people personally, because trust me I did that w/ everyone, but more as a way to recognize specific individuals & thank people by groups so to speak. It was important for me to do this & I know not one of my guests were offended.
