Did your FH's parents call your parents when you got engaged?

Did your FH's parents call your parents when you got engaged?

According to my friends, the groom's parents are supposed to call the bride's parents to wish them congratulations, etc.

What do you guys think?

My FH's parents haven't called my parents, because my FMIL is under the impression that the BRIDE'S parents are supposed to call the groom's parents first.... (She told me this before we got engaged, and was critizing my FSIL's parents for not calling them, etc.)

I know this is silly, but.... it really gets to me that she thinks she's RIGHT!! And according to all my friends, she's WRONG! My FH has offered to set her straight, but I've decided to just let it go. The parents have yet to meet, and my FH and I are just going to invite them all out to dinner.....

Our parents were good friends before we got engaged and we actually made our announcement to our Moms (the Dads already knew) together. In your situation I would just all go out to dinner soon, before anyone has time to overanalyze it. The process should be simple, not stressful. Good Luck!

Found this on the knot for you, maybe you can direct your fmil to it. Did they every meet each other? Good luck.

Engagement: How to Get Parents Acquainted?

Q. Should the groom's parents invite the bride's parents to dinner upon learning of the engagement?
A. Traditionally, yes -- the groom's parents 'call on' the bride's parents after their son tells them he's getting hitched. That means they either drop them a note or make a phone call to make plans to get together, which can mean dinner or drinks at their home, dinner and drinks out, a weekend trip to the town where they live, or whatever they're most comfortable with. But it's also totally acceptable for the bride's parents to make the first move, or for the couple to arrange a group gathering to get everyone acquainted.

Our parents did not meet before we got engaged. Actually, no one called anyone to say congrats. My parents toldx my FI that he should bring his parents over my house on this day and he did. We all had dinner together. That was almost 5 ago and our parents have not talked to each since. That is just the way my FMIL is and my mom does not want to call her first, but they do exchange cards for holdiays and b-days.

Our parents didn't actually call each other. My mom said to invite them to dinner at a restaurant and FH and I coordinated the whole thing.

Our parents have known each other for over 8 years now, so I don't think there was an 'actual' phone call. My FH did ask my parents for their blessing prior to proposing. FH's mom then took me and him and my parents out to dinner.

My mother called FH's parents. My mom was under the impression that it was her responsibility as MOB and so that is what she did. FH's parent live far away and so she has never met them, although we are trying to set something up for before the wedding. I just don't think it's right for everyone to meet for the first time on our wedding day.

I don't really think there's any right or wrong way to go about this (although I'm sure proper etiquette would say there is.) I just think someone needs to step up and do it, whether it's MOB or MOG.

Our parents knew each other already, so I don't know who called who once the news was out there. But Al's parents did host a congratulatory brunch with my family and his.

Honestly I can see a problem starting here. If your FMIL will not make a phone call to say Hello I can just imagine how 'easy' she will be during the wedding plans. I would use this situation as a gauge for how involved you might want her to be. She might insist on certain things also. Start to work this stuff out now.

I would just ask his parents out over for dinner and leave it at that. I wouldn't start quoting Emily Post to this women. It will probably just make this even harder.

My MIL never did. My mother had to do everything. If I left it up to his mother, they would of met for the first time at the wedding...lol. She is not one up on ettiquette.

my mom called my FMIL and invited her and FFIL to my house and then out to dinner (they had never met before). my mom is, by nature, a more outgoing person, so i think it just made sense.

also, you may want to get the message across that its just about MEETING each other, not a battle about who initiates it!!

good luck!

My parents and my FFIL/FMIL have not met yet, not even a phone call. But my mother is going to call my FMIL to introduce herself and invite my future in laws to dinner. My inlaws live in Mass/NH and my parents live in NY.

If they can't get together, they will all meet at the egagement party

My FMIL and my parent's all went out for brunch the following weekend.
But that's just because she was in town from the UK.

I've never heard anything about whose parents are supposed to call first though...

My mother & stepfather, father & stepmother and my future in laws (all of them) didn't meet until our engagement party which was hosted at my mom's house.

somebody should definitley call somebody. I think tecnically it's supposed to be the grooms parents, but since mine are idiots, and my parents have no clue socially, this was never done. they will be meeting for the first time at the rehearsal dinner, because I got tired of trying to get them to meet before hand when neither one had an interest. isn't that SAD!
